Greetings,

You are cordially invited to FERAL CHILD, an art exhibition on JULY 18TH in a large church.

A tiger scratching at the walls of its cage. To perform oneself; one's sexuality, race, job title, gender, role in the family. Identity not as fixed but a verb that is daily acted out, reconstituted. These habitual performances etching deeper and deeper grooves into our life paths.

Building up Surface; material processes as a channel to moments of otherness. To become other. To phase shift. Physical record of the artist momentarily inhabiting an intense self. To become multiple, a pack, a swarm.

FERAL CHILD presents a celebration of the grounded, the textural, the animalistic, the visceral, the mammalian.

Marks not traced in old channels but scratched out anew.

🎼 Eine Dirigentin. Eine Wand. Ein letzter Entwurf.

Das Mural in der Rue Desargues 7 im Pariser Viertel Belleville existiert, weil zwei Männer einen Wunsch verwirklichten, den sich ihre Freundin selbst nicht mehr erfüllen konnte.

Die Geschichte: Tamara Djurovic, bekannt unter dem Künstlernamen Hyuro, wurde 1974 in Argentinien geboren und lebte zuletzt in Valencia. Ihre monumentalen Wandgemälde zeigen häufig gesichtslose Frauenfiguren und thematisieren geschlechtsbezogene Gewalt und die Unsichtbarkeit von Frauen in der Gesellschaft. Hyuro starb am 19. November 2020 in Valencia an Leukämie. Den Entwurf für diese Wand hatte sie noch selbst konzipiert – umgesetzt hat ihn im Oktober 2021 ihr langjähriger Freund und Weggefährte Escif gemeinsam mit Axel Void, auf Einladung der Stadt Paris.

Das Motiv: Eine Frau von hinten, im schwarzen Kleid, auf einem antiken Kapitell stehend, einen Taktstock-ähnlichen Stab in der erhobenen rechten Hand. Keine Dirigentin im klassischen Sinne – eher eine Figur, die etwas lenkt, das man nicht sieht. Typisch Hyuro: kein Gesicht, keine Zeit, kein Name – damit der Betrachtende den Rest selbst zu Ende denkt.

Die Künstlerin: Hyuro gehörte zu den wenigen Frauen, die sich in der von Männern dominierten Welt des internationalen Muralismus durchgesetzt haben. Ihre figurativen, monochromen Werke sind in ganz Westeuropa zu finden.

Axel Void schrieb dazu: „Tamara asked me to assist her in painting this sketch on this wall before she died. Somehow in a strange and beautiful way, it is such an honor to be her assistant."

A very special tour, May 20th.

This is part of a four-part commission by The Guardian's Legacies of Enslavement Programme & GM Moving called the Heritage in Action routes. I am so grateful to be working with these two organisations on a free tour.

The Legacies of Enslavement programme understands restorative justice as a process of dialogue and collaboration aimed at repair and healing between The Guardian - an institution that benefited from transatlantic enslavement - and descendants of the enslaved. Manchester was the first industrial city in the world. This was built on the cotton trade. This is a shared history.

This route largely focuses on the public art and monuments of the city and the ethics and equity of them, as well as critically assessing the cultural objects review undertaken by Manchester City Council as a response to BLM in 2020 in an effort to help us to draw the links between our past and present.
