People ask what do you pack for leaving your life behind? I comprehend the question but I don’t understand it, for me it doesn’t feel like leaving. I waited for the nerves to come but they never did. I am suspended in a dream state, I am slower, quieter. I move through my new world absorbing and learning to listen anew. In waves I am frustrated I am not learning faster, but then I am reminded I love language and the time it takes to learn is part of the expression. Time is different here, stretched into a web that glitters with familiar fibers as if I’ve been here before. A handmaiden of destiny. taken in Saint-Malo, Bretagne, France by @brittanydent

Paris diaries iii.

After admiring art in vaulted rooms and throbbing crowds combined with the heat of the city, we were feeling motivated to escape to the country. We headed out of Paris to Giverny, a small village in the Normandy region.
Giverny is where impressionist painter Claude Monet made his home for over four decades. More than a home— a sanctuary where nature melts into an exploding and moody palette, the very palette that inspired his priceless artworks.

The surroundings do well to absorb the traffic of people and thought and you really do find yourself drifting. It is a peace and possibility the gardens gift you and I imagined each day or night bringing new offerings of inspiration, especially with the changing of season and weather. This flow of time and abstract nature of place is well observed through Monet’s famous works, particularly of the water lilies, which I thought to be quite mystical Shepards guiding the observer through both the physical property as well as the paintings. taken in Jardins De Monet- Giverny, France by @brittanydent

Paris diaries ii.

Dinner is at 10.

You will dress in lace and sheer because the heatwave is unbeatable and you need as delicate a layer you can have between it and your skin. You will take the car there but walk the longest way home over the Seine where music and lovers gather. You order champagne first, to take in the room, and the piano starts as you open the menu. The heat makes it hard to eat anything but chilled wine but everything looks beautiful so you order the chicken and laugh with your friend. There will be all manner of people around you.

More champagne, mais oui.

Though dinner was planned, you will let remaining night see where it takes you, every street here is alive with light and sound.. taken in Paris, France by @brittanydent

Paris diaries i.

You will awake in a different city. Your feet will bring you to the park where you will take your coffee and drink the pages of your book by the fountain you love. The fountain a marker of a dream. There is no time, just reading and writing to the rolling water. When your feet feel alive again you will walk the boulevards, passing books still asleep in their shops.

Everything there is books and flowers.

The heatwave arrives with you because it is fueled by lovers and this is the city of love. You weep for the art which meets you in every corner after a lifetime of searching. You and your friend will pause at the Petit Palais, where a breeze seems to sweep down from heaven to grace the courtyard sanctuary… taken in Paris, France by @brittanydent

Summer Solstice. The mood is sun-drenched, roses crying petals all over, lush blooms and berries, gazey guitar, read nap repeat, and nowhere to be— except on a plane to Paris…

DEVOTION From before time meant anything real (ah the blessing of youth) I was taught the importance of the quality of things that last, of devotion. My Nana was deeply devoted to religion and I spent most Sundays with her at church growing up. Whether you are assigned to a faith or not, the idea of that devotion was stirring to me even as a child and absolutely shaped a romantic mindset in me forevermore. The story, the iconography, the ceremony, an art. Now, devotion didn’t always manifest so serious, for example, city trips to Boston department stores to admire perfume and leather handbags, not the best habit to instill in a 10 year old. Other than a signature scent, my Nana “Patsy” also believed one should always have a sense of direction, and her famous phrase to me almost everyday was: “just do the best you can, until you can do better.” 🕊️ by @brittanydent
