POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Bringing everything you care about together in one place is a seriously joyful way to work! The TeachRock Concert for Creative Classrooms featured John Medeski—whose albums are nothing short of the soundtrack to my life—with unfathomably good collaborators Joe Russo and Marc Ribot. We told the story of TeachRock transforming classrooms through our honoree, East Side Community High’s Ben Wides and the students in his Musical History of PostWar America course, and our founder Stevie Van Zandt elaborated on those stories too. We celebrated my friend Deb Solomon, who has used the Wall Street Dead aHead network to bring together hundreds of professionals for biz and friendship, all through music, including that of our first act, Hell or High Water Band. We had the time of our lives and raised more than $100K to support TeachRock programs. It’s a nice way to end a year!

TeachRock on The Tonight Show! Jimmy Fallon (not pictured!) spent some time with Stevie today talking about how Bad Bunny can teach kids about the Spanish-American war. If that’s hard to imagine, well, tune in! So cool. taken in 30 Rockefeller Plaza NBC Studio by @carbonebill

The Day of Teaching the Grateful Dead! A full-day, credit-bearing professional learning workshop for New York City public school teachers at Brooklyn Bowl, and a darn good time!

That my dream several years ago of using The Dead in social studies classes could turn into legitimate curriculum AND a NYC public schools workshop is, well, dreamy! Appearing on the “Grateful Dead as a Primary Source” panel with Dead-savvy scholars Jesse Jarnow, Annabelle Walsh, Joe Schmidt & Mike Greenhaus was an incredible 🍒 on top.

Jesse said something amazing, and I paraphrase, “one of the cool things about the Dead is that it has always been this large, amorphous group of people bringing it to life well off the stage and in some way everyone in this room is a part of that right now.”

Epic! I love working with @teachrockorg and the amazing educators we serve. And @hsglobalhistory to bring it to NYC classrooms! taken in Brooklyn Bowl by @carbonebill

What a deep, affirming joy to visit my Alma mater to see TM Krishna perform at the Navaratri festival—Wesleyan’s 50th! I wish I could include the incredible accompanists’ names but I lost my program and I didn’t catch them. But wow, the ensemble played nearly 3 hours of inspired Karnatik music that seemed to both lift me to the heavens and ground me on earth. Music is the best! taken in Wesleyan University by @carbonebill

Devendra Banhart HUG at LPR. I’ve loved his albums for almost 20 years and never seen him. There were some cool moments but honestly it was the most disappointing show I can remember going to in years. Just kind of half-baked and directionless… I could tell I wasn’t alone in my assessment! Oh well, can’t win em all. taken in (le) poisson rouge by @carbonebill

What a sweet twist of fate to be deposited in front of 74 Leonard Street on John Coltrane’s 100th Birthday.

74 Leonard St, where from 1994 to 2008 the Knitting Factory’s wall of glass opened to ground level and subterranean universes that contained multitudes beyond my young imagination.

The upstairs venue where Charles Gayle’s unrelenting wailing introduced me to the free music that rolls and tumbles like time-elapsed seasons, where I witnessed an almost adolescent, pre-Kravitz Cindy Blackman pound an accompaniment to Pharoah Sanders’ yodeling and 8 foot chain of bells, where I saw John Zorn transform Yiddish music into street racing, where Henry Threadgill gave me a high five!

With it’s little CD store on the wall, selling titles from the club’s record label which sent me home with William Parker’s “Compassion Seizes BedStuy” and blew a hole in my entire conception of the who/what/when/where/why of music.

That tiny middle floor room where I watched weirdos scratch microphones on paper and chairs and walls to the amazement of me and 8 other people.

And the basement. That basement. I know that one time when I headed down to score an underaged beer, I saw an inchoate version of Steven Bernstein’s Sex Mob with John Medeski on organ, long before I knew who they were. Music that feels like who I am.

That basement where I joyously played with my band every Friday night for months, at a financial loss, because it felt so vital and important to be in that space with all those people and that music.

I read several beautiful tributes to John Coltrane on his 100th birthday, but Nate Chinen’s assessment that, “The grand sweeping current in [Coltrane’s] music…is a call toward sacrament” just leveled me.

Sacrament is what I learned at 74 Leonard St.

From a saxophone squawk to feedback to the bounce of a rivet dancing on a cymbal, if you believe in sound, you’re not really in that basement anymore.

I’m so grateful to Trane and all those musicians at 74 Leonard who helped show me the way from the basement to the great beyond. Long live Trane and long live the Knit! taken in Leonard Street by @carbonebill

🦆Max Creek, the weirdest people I’ve ever met have been at Creek shows and that’s my favorite part. Love all you Creekers!!

🎶I only get to see these people a few times a year, but it’s always good to know that there’s a higher chance of seeing them if I can make it to a Creek show. Yeah their a damn good band and they’ve been around forever, but the community they created is really something else. Although I might not be around much these days I’m always grateful to be welcomed back like time stood still.
