Now that it’s official, I’m excited to announce I have accepted the Head Strength & Conditioning position at Rossville Christian Academy @rossvilleacad.

Its an honor to work with a Christ Centered organization with a great future ahead! I should note: I’ll remain heavily involved at ELP @elitelevelperformance. This role does not limit me or ELP in our work with our clients & athletes.

We’re already hard at work and looking forward to bringing championships to RCA!

Celebrities read mean tweets.. I figured coaches should too…

I’ve been a strength coach for 15 years, here’s what other coaches have said to me. 😂

Every one of these is real… every single one...

Which one’s your favorite? 👇

One extra hour of sleep can reduce injury risk by 43%…

Researchers monitored a D1 basketball team for two full seasons and those were the results they found…

Athletes spend hours lifting, conditioning, and doing their skill work, then go home and stay up until midnight gaming or on Snapchat and then wonder why they’re always banged up.

I’m not saying your social life or gaming is bad, but what I am saying is that recovery isn’t a break from training, it’s a part of the process!

Link to the study is below.

We don’t celebrate “good” days. We stack days.
Every lift is about upholding OUR standard.
Every speed session is about OUR standard.
The standard is the standard….
Our standard is the same in September as it is in February...

A look into our last couple of sessions:

- Deadlifts. Absolute strength.
- Pogo hops. Staying bouncing.
- Single leg pogos. Unilateral plyos.
- Reverse Hypers. Posterior chain.
- Bench. Upper strength.
- Chin ups. Upper strength.

The barrier to entry to train athletes is incredibly low; whether in the school setting or private setting.

A weekend certification (sometimes not even that), being a “former player” or sometimes just having a connection somewhere and that’s all it takes to train a kid in the weight room.

That’s NOT okay!!

At BARE MINIMUM, a coach should understand how the body adapts, how to load it, when to push, when to back off.

These aren’t advanced concepts either! They’re literally the baseline. The price of admission… and sadly most coaches who work with high school athletes can’t answer or explain any of the examples in the slides above.

That’s not to say all coaches in the school or private setting are like that, because not all of them are. There are some AMAZING coaches at both levels and those types of coaches should be the norm, not the exception.

The standards have to be raised.

If your coach can’t talk you through these basic concepts, ask why.

Save this. Send it to a parent or athlete who needs it.

We have to raise the standard.

Here is why I don’t put younger athletes (~13 and younger) olds on specialized throwing programs or put an over emphasis on mechanics... If you don’t want to watch, the quick summary is that the nervous system isn’t done building yet, and by doing so you’re cutting their legs out from under them…

Weekly training dump..

Nothing spectacular or record breaking, but a good week overall considering this cold or sinus infection on steroids I’ve got that won’t go away.

Still no heavy leg loading or plyo/speed work bc of the broken foot, but at least I’m out of the boot!

I never thought I’d say it, but I’m actually looking forward to getting back to some cardio. Been shutdown bc of the foot for 5 weeks and the belt buckle is starting to show it…

Hope the #elpfamily had a great week. Enjoy the weekend.

I’ve been called too hard.

I’ve had athletes tell me I push too much. That I expect too much. I’ve even had kids tell me they feel like the victim.

And I get it. In the moment, being pushed past what you think you’re capable of doesn’t feel good. It feels unfair. It feels personal.

But after 18 years of doing this here’s what I know…

Most of those same kids came back and thanked me…

The ones who didn’t… They found a coach who let them be comfortable.

And comfortable doesn’t win.

If I’m coaching you, it’s because I believe in you and what you’re capable of. I’m not going to watch someone half ass their way through a session and call it development…

That’s not coaching. That’s babysitting.

There’s a version of hard that’s degrading. That tears people down and leaves them there. I want nothing to do with that.

But there’s another version of hard that says, I see your ceiling, and it’s higher than where you’re standing right now, and I care too much about you to let you stay comfortable.

That’s the version I coach with every single day.

Soft loses. Every time. In the gym, on the field, and in life.

And the kids who are willing to be uncomfortable now? They’re the ones who show up later.

Nobody talks about the mistakes.

The answer you didn’t know.. The client you could’ve done more for.. The times you seemed to be on a coach’s bad side but never understood why...

Or the times you were so focused on building something that you lost sight of the person right in front of you.

I’ve made all of those mistakes… And more. More than I care to admit.

But something I’ve noticed lately is that people are genuinely afraid to make mistakes anymore… Athletes. Coaches. People in general.

And I believe that’s b/c we’ve been raised in a society that praises having the right answer, rather than asking the right questions…

Instead of engaging or admitting we don’t know something, we say nothing at all. We disengage. We pretend.

I see it every day in the gym and in the wellness setting.

That mindset will keep you stuck…

Without mistakes, there is no growth. Without questions, there are no answers.

My mistakes have taught me more than my successes have..

They’ve taught me to slow down. To assess. To ask more questions instead of assuming I have the answers.

They taught me to focus on the person in front of me. Not my brand. Not my reputation. Not the next highlight reel.

Whether you’re a coach, an athlete, or just someone trying to figure it out — you’re going to mess up. That’s NOT a flaw in the process. That IS the process.

Ask questions. Be wrong. Learn anyways.

After 18 years in this field, and 39 years on this earth, I’m still doing all three…

And I think that’s the point.
