Remembering the legendary leopardess 'Siyambalagas Wala Female' ♥️

Siyambalagas Wala 3:3 female was a literal kingmaker for the Yala block 1. She proved herself as a successful mother summa cum laude by raising several cubs up to adulthood and those cubs became exceptionally successful, some even becoming legends in the process. She was one of the most sighted leopards in Yala Block 1 during the decade of 2010 to 2020. (Her territory included the areas of Kotigala, Ūraniya Junction, Debaragas Wala, Lōlugas Wala, Siyambalagas Wala, Rathmal Wala, Karawgas Wala, Ūraniya Lagoon, Buthawa Plains, Maliththankotu Wala, and Welmalkema).

Even though she has been missing since the beginning of 2021, the powerful bloodline she left behind is still active and alive in Block 1 of Yala National Park. She would be remembered as a legendary leopardess who raised several dominant males and successful resident females.

Will we see her again? Will she stay in block 1? That is the question...

This female is the reclusive Rakina Wala 3:3 female who appeared in Yala block 1 in 2021, after a long 8 year hiatus.

She was seen mating regularly with Pan Wala 2:2 male and she even visited some nearby territories hoping to establish or expand her current territory(which we believe is located in block 2, north of the Manik river). But she has taken to her original territory these days.

We expected her to disappear back to block 2 (where we do not visit regularly) and we have grounds to believe that this is what happened.
.
Will we see her again? Will she stay in block 1? That is the question...

Can you hazard a guess as to what happened here? Are these two black-naped hares fighting over territory?
Well...no! This is right after a successful mating attempt.

And hares happen to be induced ovulators - that is, they start ovulating when they are mating.

Consequently, pregnancy is pretty much assured if they mate. That's where we think the term "breeding like hares" come from

"Natta: the uncrowned king of Wilpattu'. After the reopening of Wilpattu NP in early 2010, it was not easy to see a proper leopard sighting. But Wilpattu NP had its own plans. In late 2011, a new star rose and brought Wilpattu NP back into the "spot"light. He was not shy or scared around the presence of safari vehicles. He gave us a good insight into the lives of these elusive big cats, which helped with our ongoing observations. Easily, Natta would be the most photographed leopard in Sri Lanka in his heyday. He would have made so many visitors to fall in love with leopards and with the Wilpattu NP. Although he was the main attraction, he was not big in size for his age. Due to the same reason, he could not become a dominant male in his home range. But this is where Natta became wise and smart. Instead of taking a high risk method of challenging other dominant males he had a different plan. He became a 'nomadic leopard'. He started travelling a lot around the North-western and Western part of the Wilpattu NP. He did not maintain a permanent territory but a huge home range that he managed to rule wisely. Though there are no confirmed sightings of this amazing solitary leopard for the last two years, we hope he would do one last comeback as he used to do. He might not have a crown on his head, a throne to rule from and a territory to protect, yet he is the uncrowned king of Wilpattu NP, in our hearts

Wild boars are among the scavengers found in the Sri Lankan wilderness. The image here depicts a sounder of hungry wild boars looking for a rightful feast off of a spotted deer kill. But they seemed anxious. Why is that? Because a mugger crocodile, the rightful owner of the kill, was holding on to the spotted deer carcass from the other end under the water. Why give the croc a side of pork as well when venison is already on the menu? This happens to be a really good example for the cyclic nature of the wild.

P.S- collective noun for wild boars is 'Sounder of wildboars'

Mature and discreet hunters do not panic. Why waste energy on a distant victim, patience brings comfort!

The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) is considered a medium-sized crocodilian.

Adult female muggers are 2 to 2.5 m (6 ft 7 in to 8 ft 2 in) on average, and male muggers measure between 3 to 3.5 m (9 ft 10 in to 11 ft 6 in). They rarely grow up to 5 m (16 ft 5 in). The largest known muggers measured 5.63 m (18 ft 6 in).

Hatters gonna hat!

What's with this spotted deer (Axis axis) buck and this suave headgear?
Is it venturing towards high fashion?
Is branches the new summer hat? Apparently not, it seems.

Two things could have happened here. Most obvious could be that he snuck through a tight spot and the branches got stuck.

Another reason would be that this buck - probably in the mating season - was spreading its scent to females and competing males by thrashing grass and shrubs alike. Whence came these branches that stuck on its head, increasing its swag over 9000.
