Let's talk about some frightfully fantastic fungi! With a little luck, you can find the western witch's hat, a vibrant waxcap mushroom native to Northern California that particularly loves nestling beneath redwoods.

It is known for a reddish-orange, conical cap that resembles a witch's hat, a slimy coating, and a tendency to turn black when bruised or mature. The mushrooms begin to emerge during the rainy season, typically starting in mid-October.

Remember: DO NOT eat any mushrooms you find in the parks. The Bay Area is home to some of the world's most toxic mushrooms, and the western witch's hat is considered inedible. Foraging is strictly prohibited in East Bay Regional Parks.

If you've been hiking in the deep East Bay lately, you may have spotted a tarantula or two along the trails. September/October means peak mating season for them. During this time of year, males begin to roam about, actively searching for females to court and mate with.

Even though they're bigger than the spiders we're used to seeing, they're harmless & actually looking to avoid contact with people.

I spoke to Kristina Parkison from @ebrpd & hikers at Sunol Regional Wilderness about why this time of year is so special

It's tarantula season in the East Bay! 🕷️ Tarantulas are gentle creatures that you're more likely to see roaming around the parks in the late summer and fall because of mating season. During this period, male tarantulas leave their burrows in search of love. They'll cross trails and roads, often traveling miles, following pheromones to find a mate.

Despite their large, hairy appearance, tarantulas are docile and naturally avoid humans. If you encounter one, give it room and admire it from a respectful distance. If you see them on the road, slow down and give them plenty of space to safely cross.

Look for tarantulas in Del Valle, Sunol, Black Diamond Mines, Pleasanton Ridge, and Las Trampas, or meet Harry the male tarantula, our Animal Ambassador at the Del Valle Visitor Center! by @ebrpd
