Spent the weekend waxing prints and getting things together for @filterphoto festival later this week. It’s so fun to take the time to explore each print’s differences, tones, and their response to different lighting. Not to mention think about the continuing arc of this work… a lot I’m processing on this day of the solstice 💫

As summer wanes and fall washes in, I’m doing my best to hold onto the lessons I learned this summer. I’m trying to slow down, find moments of small pleasure, look around and bring gratitude. It’s not always easy for me, and I’m far from perfect, but there’s a different way to live in balance and I’m working on adjusting the scales.

Here’s some views of my work this summer, my favorite tide pools and beaches to be in conversation with. I started collecting seaweed and thinking more about Anna Atkins. Sneak peek into some process work happening as a collaboration between @eleanoroakes and @kimharty glass. Harty’s hand-blown glass replicas of historic breast and bottle feeding vessels are represented through Oakes’ historic salted paper printing process made using breastmilk as a light-sensitizing agent in the process.

This ongoing collaboration proposes care as a foundational force of visual culture and material practice. We have some exciting updates we’ll get to share with you soon on this! by @eleanoroakes

Truly amazing watching the solar eclipse over the basque coast last night, the eclipse slowing sinking into the horizon. At the moment of totality I threw my phone down and swam out into the ocean with my son as fireworks went off down the coast.

I also coated paper in the pools and waves of the receding tide, dreaming of future work. What are you manifesting? ☀️☀️☀️ taken in La Côte des Basques, Biarritz by @eleanoroakes

Had such an amazing 36 hours at @rencontresarles last week, I’m still processing all the amazing work on view. Felt a bit like a pilgrimage to drive across France for a quick glimpse at this incredible fair. Congratulations to all the artists with work on view! 👏

Sharing a sneak peek of an ongoing collaboration between @eleanoroakes and @kimharty 🍼

Through our shared practices of photography and glass, we’re exploring how materials carry memory, how bodies transmit knowledge, and how overlooked histories can be reactivated through making.

The glass works by @kimharty are scale replicas of breast-pumping and infant-feeding devices that range from the 20th century back to the first century BCE. These objects reveal a long history of glass in the intimate technologies of care.

The photographs are made by @eleanoroakes using breastmilk and tears as photographic chemistry in the historic salted paper printing process, imbuing the print with maternal labor and activating it as a site of reciprocity and vulnerability.

This has been such a fun space for collaboration between our shared practices and interests, stay tuned for much more to come… by @eleanoroakes
