The next generation of EMDR research starts with investing in the researchers who will lead it. Through the EMDRIA-MQ Foundation Research Fellowship Program, the EMDRIA Foundation and MQ Mental Health Research are supporting early-career scientists pursuing EMDR therapy research in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Fellows will receive up to £250,000 in funding over three years, along with support designed to help researchers build independent careers and strengthen the future of EMDR research. Applications for the 2027 Fellowship Program will open in December 2026, with eligible researchers including those with 3–7 years of postdoctoral experience who are based at a university, hospital or research institution. This partnership is about more than funding individual projects. It’s an investment in growing research capacity, bringing new perspectives into the field and building the evidence that will help shape the future of EMDR therapy. Interested in applying? How can we better support the professionals who spend their days supporting others? A new article in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research explores that question through a preliminary evaluation of the Group Resource Enhancement Protocol (G-REP), an EMDR-informed group intervention designed to strengthen coping resources. Researchers Joanne L. B. Porter, Jemma Sikorski and Abbey Nicholas examined G-REP's feasibility, acceptability and preliminary outcomes among staff in a UK community learning disability team. The evaluation found encouraging patterns in self-reported resilience and secondary traumatic stress over three months, along with positive participant feedback. Improvements in burnout were not sustained. While the small, single-site evaluation cannot establish effectiveness, it offers an early look at how EMDR-informed resource-building approaches might contribute to healthcare staff wellbeing—and where further research is needed. Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, and we're highlighting perspectives from EMDRIA members on culturally responsive care. We asked our members: “What factors help ensure a culturally responsive EMDR case conceptualization for a client who identifies as Hispanic/Latinx?” Their responses explore the importance of cultural humility, curiosity and understanding each client's unique lived experience. From language, family relationships and spirituality to immigration experiences, discrimination and cultural strengths, our members share how these factors can inform EMDR case conceptualization. There is no single Hispanic or Latinx experience, and culturally responsive care begins with listening rather than making assumptions. Thank you to the members who contributed their perspectives to this important conversation. Read the full EMDRIA Members Respond feature on Focal Point at emdria.org/blog by @emdr_ia
What if being a good therapist doesn’t require having all the answers? In our latest Focal Point guest blog, Dr. Rachel Rashkin reflects on what it means to practice in a field where there is always another theory, training, integration or clinical perspective to consider. That abundance can strengthen our work. It can also leave clinicians wondering whether they know enough, are doing enough or are keeping up. “The goal was never to master everything but to know enough, remain humble, balanced, curious, inquisitive, and to continue showing up for the people who trust us with their stories.” In The Unfinished Therapist: Living With Uncertainty in an Age of Endless Clinical Innovation, Rashkin explores a different relationship with uncertainty, one where not knowing isn’t necessarily something to overcome, but something clinicians can learn to hold. Why can a behavior be so difficult to change, even when someone understands why they want to stop? For National Recovery Month, our latest Focal Point guest blog explores the intersection of trauma, addiction and compulsive behaviors through an EMDR lens. Gerard Ilaria, LCSW, examines how trauma, reward, habit formation and emotional regulation can contribute to compulsive patterns—and reviews established EMDR approaches used in addiction treatment. He also shares “Buzzkill,” an EMDR-informed intervention he developed in his clinical practice to help interrupt compulsive behavioral patterns and support more adaptive choices. The blog emphasizes that addiction treatment is complex and that approaches like these are not replacements for comprehensive care, which may include trauma processing, relapse prevention, psychotherapy, medication-assisted treatment and recovery supports. What happens when understanding an experience isn’t the same as feeling something shift? In our latest Focal Point guest blog, Allison Bruce, LPCC-S, reflects on how her background in Gestalt therapy informs her practice of EMDR therapy—from attention to the here and now to the role of the body, therapeutic relationship and relational attunement. Drawing from her clinical experience, Bruce explores the places where she sees Gestalt and EMDR therapy intersect: presence, curiosity and helping clients remain connected to what is emerging emotionally and physically. As she writes, “The protocol matters, but so does the therapist’s ability to remain grounded, attuned, and responsive to the client’s nervous system in real time. The relationship matters.” Read “The Intersection of Gestalt Therapy and EMDR Therapy: Healing in the Here and Now” at emdria.org/blog by @emdr_ia

New from JEMDR: Can reprocessing sometimes support stabilization? A new article in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research examines that question in the context of complex trauma treatment. In “Stabilization-Oriented Restricted EMDR Reprocessing in Complex Trauma Treatment,” Juliane Tortes Saint-Jammes, Maya Larribité and Alix Lavandier propose a clinical sequencing framework for carefully titrated, restricted reprocessing of selected present, future and highly circumscribed past targets. Rather than viewing stabilization and reprocessing as absolute opposites, the authors explore how target, scope, dose, timing and safety can inform clinical decision-making while preserving dual attention, present orientation and the window of tolerance. As the authors emphasize, this framework is intended to support clinical reasoning—not introduce a new EMDR protocol or provide evidence of efficacy.
