Spring at home has been very special this year thanks to @prestopancakes and the many wildflower seeds he squirreled away last year.

We’d love to eventually get rid of the turf and replace it all with drought-tolerant native plants and beautiful landscaping but for this is our budget-friendly alternative 😅🧡 taken in Woodland, California by @eunahtuna

I said goodbye to Butters today 💔 He had been my shelter “project dog” these last couple months, working closely with him on leash training and taking him on multiple outings to give him relief from shelter life while he waited for a forever home.

Butters was a special dog. Uniquely handsome, smart as hell, and deeply sensitive. We bonded quickly and the more I got to know him I was sure that I could score him a home in no time. But he waited months with no interest.

Then an unfortunate incident last week signaled the end. If he’d been adopted earlier, things could have been so different for him. But people aren’t adopting and many of those who do end up returning the dogs anyway. It’s a heartbreaking situation for shelters and rescues everywhere.

Butters didn’t ask for any of this. He didn’t ask for some careless backyard breeder to produce a husky x pittie mix that would require a more skilled handler to thrive. He didn’t ask to end up at the shelter when he was clearly dumped as an adult dog. Now he’s gone.

I’ve grieved many shelter dogs but this loss is especially painful. It’s hard to not feel like I failed him because I didn’t find him a home in time. I’m clinging to the beautiful memories I have with him. I hope he knows how much I adored him and that he felt loved even at the very end while I gave his bowling ball head his final scritches and squishes. I’m grateful to the shelter volunteers and staff who helped along the way. I’m grateful that I had the privilege to know this beautiful dog and learn so much from my time with him. by @eunahtuna

Peach and I learned the hard way that she cannot be trusted with her favorite dental chews 😫 A normal Monday turned into 45 minutes of pure panic when I found Peach oozing foam from her mouth while she attempted to regurgitate the chew that was lodged deep in her throat. I tried to pull it out myself but it was impossible. She was writhing on the ground and all I could do was haul her into my car (forgot my purse, didn’t lock the door, had no collar or leash) and rushed her to the vet.

We hit every red light and at each stop my heart was racing as I checked her gums to make sure they weren’t going pale. Fortunately the chew wasn’t blocking her airways, but was fully trapped in her esophagus.

Dr. Coil and vet tech Christie saved the day. Under sedation, they pulled out the chew in one piece. I was able to pick up my baby at 5pm since they wanted to monitor her while she recovered.

Be careful with hard chews for your pups! These ones were even vet-approved but they will only work for pups who are more patient chewers than my gremlin 🥲 by @eunahtuna

✨A D O P T E D✨
Milo was one of those dogs that just didn’t get noticed. Adopters constantly overlooked him and as more time went by he became more stressed and reactive 😢 Since he’s so big, we worried his reactivity would make it hard to adopt him out…but a day trip made it abundantly clear that Milo is a completely different dog outside of the shelter!

Once in the real world, Milo proved that he’s not only good with dogs (both large and small), he has potential to coexist with cats. He even met a horse and did so well! He loves all people and loves to lean in for extra pets. He got to spend all afternoon decompressing at a volunteer’s home and was an excellent guest. Milo did not have any accidents indoors and quietly napped in the sunniest spots of the house.

He’s a big boy (over 100 lbs) but he’s incredibly gentle and relatively easy to manage. Milo is amazing and such a hidden gem. Please consider adopting this wonderful dog — DM us or email adopt@yoloshelter.org to meet Milo!

After being found wandering as a stray in Yolo County, senior boy Axl spent over 6 months at a local shelter. He was fortunately pulled by El Dorado County German Shepherd Rescue (@edcgsr) and is now in a wonderful foster home waiting for someone to choose him as their forever buddy 🥹 He’s gentle, sweet, and eager to please.

He would make an awesome walking buddy for someone who takes leisurely strolls. He doesn’t need a lot of exercise at all and is generally low maintenance.

Axl gets along well with other friendly dogs (both large and small) and even has potential to do well with a dog-savvy cat. He loves meeting new people and is overall such an easygoing guy.

He is currently being fostered in Davis, CA and can meet you there or in Shingle Springs at EDCGSR.

Message us or email edcgsr@edcgsr.com to arrange a meet and greet with Axl 🐾

Latest foster: Boris 💛

He was found on the side of the road just sitting next to the dead bodies of 2 other dogs (presumably dumped, possibly hit by cars). His skin is really bad on his back and neck due to flea dermatitis and I found 3 dying ticks on him while giving him his first medicated bath.

He was incredibly shut down and scared at the shelter but has been a delight at home. He’s had a busy first day with his bath, a great play date with another dog, and just exploring every nook and cranny of the house.

From his lack of potty training, flea condition, and still being intact at ~5 years old, I suspect he may have been kept as an outdoor dog before he was dumped or turned loose. We’ll work on getting him in tip top shape for a forever home 🥹 taken in Woodland, California by @eunahtuna

Update: ADOPTED
This gremlin named Chuckles was scheduled for euthanasia today due to behavior issues and lack of space at a Sacramento shelter…so I offered to foster him.

He arrived earlier this week and it wasn’t really until I met him in person that I realized how stressed and scared he was. He was found stray with a mangled tail that had to be amputated. He tries to stash and bury his food like he needs to save it in case he can’t get another meal later. He was adopted once by someone who didn’t even want to meet him first — just wanted him for his looks, only to dump him back at the shelter a month later, completely terrified and with fear nipping behavior that he didn’t have before.

Fortunately he’s a small dog (12 lbs potato) with pretty dull teeth. He is actually very playful and loves to fetch and carry soft toys around. He was also reported to have separation anxiety but after some crying in the crate the first night, he actually now puts himself to bed in the crate all on his own and has shown zero separation anxiety ever since.

Chuckles is the perfect work from home or retirement buddy, especially for someone who doesn’t want a needy dog. Honestly, he’s like having a cat — sets boundaries clearly, low maintenance, and clean (he is very potty trained). He doesn’t make the greatest first impression since he does a lot of grumbling, but he’s a sucker for treats and settled in when he realized he was stuck with us for the time being.

If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Chuckles, please have them DM me 🙏🏻

It’s my Gotcha Day 🥳
——
4 years ago, I was desperately searching for a dog to add to the family. It was the height of COVID lockdown and all local rescues and shelters kept running out of dogs to adopt…so I kept expanding the radius of my search. Then I found @dpsrescue and saw Peach’s profile (named Nala by the rescue). I submitted an application, did a phone interview, and then was approved to adopt her.

My husband, our dog Link, and I drove 2 hours to Palo Alto on a Friday evening. She was in an x-pen with 2 poodle-type dogs who were eagerly trying to greet me—meanwhile Peach was stoically sitting in the back of the pen by herself. The moment her foster handed her leash to me and I saw her grumpy little face up close I started bawling. She was perfect.

Shortly after adopting her, we learned she had a partial ACL tear that hadn’t healed fully, which caused her to limp if she got zoomies. We kept her on essentially “bed rest” for 6 months and actively prevented zoomies to let her leg heal. We also learned that she needed to have 2 teeth removed. So we got them removed, along with a full cleaning. Then we learned that she was likely 7 years old instead of 2-4 years old 😭 Nothing we can do about that other than cherish every second we have with this precious gremlin who has forever changed our lives for the better.

We love you Peachy girl and cannot imagine life without you 🥹
