Akron is blessed with a fantastic symphony orchestra, and one of my favorite things to do is attend its concerts in the stunning Brutalist architecture of E.J. Thomas Hall.

Last spring, I was honored to be asked to join the board of the @akronsymphony and it’s been fascinating to get a behind-the-scenes education. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be embraced by the warm and friendly people who run the organization. You have no idea how lucky we are as a community to have such a great team at the helm of orchestra. Our conductors are worth their weight in gold and the players will leave you spellbound!

This Saturday is the first concert of the season, and the orchestra is offering a special discount for Everyday Akron followers & their friends!

Here are the program notes for Saturday’s concert, provided by YOUR Akron Symphony Orchestra:

The season kicks off with a whirlwind blast of emotional energy and dazzling imagery. At the starting line is arguably the most recognizable of all overtures… the William Tell by Rossini. A symphonic suite from Studio Ghibli’s iconic Howl’s Moving Castle follows, along with Dance of the Hours from Disney’s Fantasia (1940).

Headlining our season debut is an autobiographical tour-de-force as romantically beautiful as it is deliciously dark: Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. Leonard Bernstein said it best: “You take a trip and you wind up screaming at your own funeral.”

Hello! Silas Hite here. I want to share my favorite (indoor) place in Akron with you—my studio!

I jokingly refer to it as Bath Time Studios because, technically, we live in Bath Township. The studio is not typically for rent, it’s my office. As I mentioned yesterday, I am a composer and I write music for films, TV shows, video games, commercials, and live concert performances, so I pretty much live in my studio. I collect and play lots of different instruments on my scores. This space is my happy place!

When my wife and I moved here from LA in 2023, I teamed up with local builder Fred Zumpano to design and build it.
It was my first time building a studio of this size from scratch (2,800 sq. ft.!), and I was a bit nervous about being the primary acoustician. But after lots of research and a few late-night panic attacks, the studio was complete—and it looks/sounds GORGEOUS!

I feel lucky to live in a time where I can continue my career from anywhere. I loved my 20 years in Los Angeles, but a studio of this size and quality would never have been financially viable there. Plus, here I’m surrounded by trees, family, and a supportive community.

Thank you for making all of this possible, Akron!!! ❤️

Hello everyone! My name is Silas Hite and I am taking over the Everyday Akron account this week. My wife Lisa McIntyre-Hite (@lisapizzalosakronles) and I live in Bath, Ohio. My wife is an expert in education and workforce development and I am a composer. I write music for film, television, video games, and commercials. A love letter to @thenightlightcinema 💌

There’s a lot that changed for us when we moved to Akron from Ohio City in 2024. One of my favorite changes is how often we get to go to see movies at Akron’s indie theater.

Film has a special way of helping us make sense of the world, see other perspectives, and connect us with our fellow moviegoers. Thank you to the Nightlight team for bringing movies to Akron that really make me feel something 🫂

Last night we saw The History of Concrete from documentarian @peepingjohn, and it was one of those fun theater experiences where everyone was laughing and reacting together. 💯
