The Row was established in 2005 by Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen. The brand focuses on use of exceptional fabrics and precise tailoring—eschewing ostentatious ornamentation, opting rather for minimally decorated, well made classics.

In 2017, Vogue Runway writer Nicole Phelps described their Fall Ready-to-Wear show as ā€œone of their most engaging collections ever.ā€ Shown in the former mid-century modern furniture store Wyeth, this collection was devoid of embellishment, and composed of garments made entirely of white, black and cream. The stand outs in the collection were outerwear: cinched leather and velvet trenches, frothy dusters, all neatly tailored.

The Row shows up in 33 events in Fashion Calendar and in the @cfda Fashion Calendar, including a listing for their Fall 2017 Ready-to-Wear collection. Check out the Fashion Calendar Research Database (@fcrd_fit) to discover more contemporary American fashion designers!

To celebrate the restoration and re-release of Douglas Keeve’s @douglaskeeve legendary documentary ā€œUnzippedā€ starring Isaac Mizrahi @imisaacmizrahi we are looking at some of Mizrahi’s early listings in Fashion Calendar and events related to the film’s original release.

Mizrahi first listed his Fall 1988 collection in the Fashion Calendar. The following year he was honored at the 1989 @cfda awards and was included in DuPont’s ā€œThe XXI Century : Fashioning the Future,ā€ panel discussion about new fibers such as Lycra.

Since the late 1980s, Mizrahi appeared over 175 times in Fashion Calendar, including the Fall 1994 runway show featured in Unzipped. Later that year, the September 1994 issue listed the first private screening hosted by Bergdorf Goodman and Elle magazine at the 57th Street Playhouse.
Both Mizrahi and Keeve received a special honor for the film at the CFDA awards in February 1996.

To commemorate the 25 years since the catastrophic September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in downtown New York City, we are looking back at the NYFW that was cut short and the fashion community’s response during the aftermath. The September 3rd, 2001 issue of Fashion Calendar includes the NYFW grid for the Spring/Summer 2002 collections. The first show on 9/11 was @lizlangeofficial who was showing the first ever maternity-wear collection at NYFW. Once the first tower was hit the rest of the day was cancelled, and as the impact on the city became clearer, so was the rest of NYFW. Much of the resources that were allocated for Bryant Park were donated to the rescue services: water bottles, tents, and empty spaces around the city were needed for emergency and rescue services.

The following week, designers and brands began a very somber showing of the spring/summer collections. Many of the larger brands shared their spaces with the emerging designers who were no longer able to show in rented venues. The fashion industry led with care towards the community and the city. Many designers sent models down the runway with black armbands or wearing American flags.

Today marks the beginning of NYFW and the start of the global fashion month circuit for the Spring/Summer 2027 fashion season. For decades, Eleanor Lambert, who organized the original Press Week and helped establish the @cfda hosted a luncheon for local and international press, and the fashion community to kickoff each season. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has continued that tradition by hosting @cfda NYFW kickoff events, which today signals that the market week is in full swing.

Check out @fcrd_fit to learn more about NYFW and all the events organized during fashion week. Slide 1-2: image from the CFDA NYFW kickoff event hosted at Gracie Mansion in September 2022. From his eponymous label, to his work with Geoffrey Beene, WilliWear, Kim Jones and Marc Jacobs, Andre Walker @and_re_walker has contributed to American fashion for decades. Walker’s impact was recognized last year when he was awarded the 2025 Isabel Toledo Board of Director’s Tribute from @cfda . It’s only fitting that his first listing in the October 10, 1988 issue of Fashion Calendar was on the same page as Toledo’s show, which was to take place earlier in the day on November 4, 1988.

Italian fashion designer Alberta Ferretti first started showing on Milanese runways in 1981, and achieved great success with her romantic, feminine styles. Her sensual and refined design work is characterized by a use of light chiffons, rich embroidery and lace.

Alongside her brother Massimo, Feretti also co-founded Aeffe, a publicly traded company and distributor based in San Giovanni in Marignano in 1976. Aeffe U.S.A produced and distributed lines by Moschino, Rifat Ozbek, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Narcisco Roriguez.

In 1984, she began her diffusion line, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. This brand was aimed at a more youthful clientele, at a more accessible price point than the products sold through her luxury house.

Alberta Ferretti’s name appears 34 times in the Fashion Calendar Research Database. One of the listings includes an invite only showing of Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti’s Fall/Winter 2007 collection, held at 548 West 22nd Street in New York.

This collection, composed of primarily muted tones, included belted cocktail dresses, knee-length leather dresses with decorative buttons up the center, and woolen, textured coats in the style of mid-twentieth-century designers such as Bonnie Cashin.

A June 2, 1941 issue of the Fashion Calendar included a listing for a free three-week ā€œWarner Brothers Corset Course,ā€ open to 25 applicants. Recommended for saleswomen as well as those unemployed, and seeking to prepare themselves for corset-selling, the course promised both technical and professional training. Participants were offered a tour of corset production within a factory, instruction in every stage of operations, and guidance on how to fit a corset to ā€œevery type of figure.ā€ This program also included a lecture on female anatomy delivered by a doctor, which frames the practice of corsetry selling and wearing within quasi-medical authority. Notably, the listing claims that the previous year’s course, ā€œbrought employment to all who took it.ā€ This positions the course as a direct pathway to economic stability for women.

In the early 20th-century, women’s labor in fashion retail as well as garment production expanded alongside the growth of ready-to-wear industries. This offered new, if still constrained, forms of economic participation. Programs such as this one reflect how the specialized knowledge of undergarment construction and the female body became a marketable skill.

Listings such as this Warner Brothers Corset Course, offer a glimpse into how fashion and the bodies within it have been shaped over time. Explore the Fashion Calendar Research Database (@fcrd_fit), to discover more moments such as this one, where industry listings reveal stories of women’s labor.
