Today marks the beginning of NYFW and the start of the global fashion month circuit for the Spring/Summer 2027 fashion season. For decades, Eleanor Lambert, who organized the original Press Week and helped establish the @cfda hosted a luncheon for local and international press, and the fashion community to kickoff each season. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has continued that tradition by hosting @cfda NYFW kickoff events, which today signals that the market week is in full swing.

Stephen Burrows (b.1943) @stephenburrowsworld is an American Fashion designer based in New York City. Burrows was born in Newark, New Jersey and studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology @fitnyc . He is known primarily for his brightly colored knit garments with a “lettuce hem,” and for being among the first African American fashion designers to sell internationally, developing a global mainstream high-fashion clientele.

On November 28, 1973, Burrows was one of the five American fashion designers who participated in the Battle of Versailles fashion show. The event, spearheaded by American fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, marked a turning point in American fashion history, elevating American ready-to-wear on the global stage. Burrows stood out among his peers for his dynamic, movement driven designs.

Throughout the Fashion Calendar, Burrows’ name populates in over 200 events, reflecting his prolific and influential career.

Shaped by her immigrant upbringing and a pivotal mentorship, Natalie Nudell @natalien__ is redefining how we understand the history of fashion in the United States. 👗✨

The 2026 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Fashion & Culture winner was first given access to the “Fashion Calendar” archive by Ruth Finley in 2014 after the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) acquired the publication. 📕📗📘

Now a professor at @fitnyc, Natalie has leveraged Finley’s donated archive of 30,000 Fashion Calendar pages, transforming it into the Fashion Calendar Research Database @fcrd_fit. This open-source tool, as she puts it, “helps reveal and quantify the presence and impact of women, immigrants, and many different communities who have shaped the [fashion] industry.”

On November 19th we launched the “Archiving New York Fashion Week: FCRD x CFDA” initiative in partnership with @cfda . @fitnyclibrary ‘s Fashion Calendar Research Database now includes all of the information and data from the CFDA Fashion Calendar from the past decade (2015-2025), bringing the timeline to the present. This ongoing collaboration is possible with the support and guidance of our advisory committee, @cfda team @stevenkolb @aldoaraujo , Joseph Anderson project coPI and Digital Lead, @fitnyc administration and support staff.

Announcing the Archiving New York Fashion Week: FCRD x CFDA initiative, a collaboration between the Fashion Calendar Research Database and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) which brings the NYFW timeline to the present. This ongoing initiative integrates fashion show listings and data from the CFDA Fashion Calendar from 2015 to 2025 into this database. The @fcrd_fit team thanks our Advisory Board members, @fitnyc , @fitnyclibrary and @cfda for their continued support and guidance in making this project possible.

Today marks a new era for CFDA Fashion Calendar as we relaunch the site and announce our collaboration with FIT’s Fashion Calendar Research Database, which integrates our fashion show listings and data from the past 10 years since CFDA acquired the calendar from the late publisher Ruth Finley.

In continuation of her mission and honoring Ruth Finley’s trust in the CFDA as the official organizer of NYFW, we take a look at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards film when we honored the publishing icon with the Board of Directors’ Tribute. Head to link in bio for more.
