I have to put this out there because it’s all I’ve been able to think about since the death of my friend Hilde.

We need to try to be there for the people we love — even when it feels hard, or futile, or uncomfortable. We need to check in, send the message, make the call.

Lately, I’ve wondered whether our obsession with self and self-improvement, boundaries, and “protecting our peace” - spurred on in no small part by this platform - has come at the expense of showing up for one another and of our ability to sense each other’s real pain and fragility. Kindness requires thinking beyond ourselves.

In summer 2024, at her request, I started helping Hilde on a reinvention of Jerry Gogosian — one that I hoped would help separate her from an internet persona that was threatening to swallow her. I was one of her oldest friends and she trusted me.

She was struggling with the relentless and even cruel criticism that came with being a public figure online. People responded to Jerry as a character, a concept
—but often forgot there was a person behind the account. At the same time, Hilde loved the attention, the immediacy, and the exchange of ideas. It wasn’t simple.

In the process of trying to help, I hurt her. She came to feel criticized by me… she felt that I was embarrassed by the increasingly personal direction of the content she was sharing. I wasn’t embarrassed. I was worried about my friend.

I won’t go into the details, but we eventually fell out. She felt misunderstood. I felt misunderstood. I wanted to help, and instead I ended up feeling helpless.

We hadn’t spoken in eighteen months when I got the call from Matt. Since then, all I can think about is how much I wish I had picked up the phone and called my friend. I don’t know whether it would have changed anything. But I do know she would have known how much I loved her, and was proud of her. And that matters. by @fifimackay
