We're baaaaaack!

Your local pop-up community restaurant returns. And in a slightly different format (more on that later), but with the same ethos of affordable wholesome food made by some of Frome's best chefs, eaten together, and with contributions from local nature-friendly producers.

Canteen will pop-up every last Tuesday of the month (not including December), from now until January:

- 27 October
- 24 November
- 26 January
- 23 February

At Trinity Hall, BA11 3DE, 5pm to 7pm

🎪 COMING TO FROME: The ForEm 🎪

🎟️ Part fête. Part exhibition. Part experiment.

The ForEm asks deceptively simple questions:
💬 What makes Frome, Frome? Who gets to decide what comes next?

Expect performances, films, artworks, games, community stories and a warm invitation to question ways of thinking, feeling, dreaming, sensing - and making sense - of the town we share.

The ForEm is the commissioned work of Frome-based artist Kate Keara Pelen @katekearapelen developed through her collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project @uofglasgow @uofgsps It turns a year of research into a space for the town to play with, challenge and add to what we have found. The ForEm invites people to explore the stories they tell about the town: its independence, creativity and community spirit, and also its challenges, contradictions and changing identities.

🧵You can encounter the Community Loom designed by Claire Orpin @greenseathreads and Tamara Jones @by_tamarajones and films 🎬 made by Frome residents through the community film project led by Dr John Sealey of Fabian’s Film.

There will be free performances:
🧭 Tom Spencer will guide an unconventional gallery tour through the artefacts, stories, myths and characters of the town.
🎰 Martin Scott – bringing together Town Crier @fromesofficialtowncrier Cheese Lord @thecheeselorduk and long-time observer of Frome life – will invite audiences to join him In Pursuit of Frome by spinning his wheel of Frome Roulette, triggering different stories about the town’s civic tribes, traditions and archetypes.

Please sign the government petition for a live televised emergency briefing about the climate crisis - a clear and factual reality check of what’s happening and what we can do @nebriefing
Help secure a parliamentary debate. Build pressure on the PM to put the climate crisis in front of us, the UK population.
It’s at 40k signatures … but we need 100k for the government to host a debate.

Just starting out making change in your rural community? If you're finding it magic, and messy, you're not alone.

We've made something just for you. It's the stuff we wish we'd had when we started, made to help you spend less time with a search engine and more time with your community.

Rural Changemakers is a free new resource library, built from five years of community-led action in and around Frome and co-created with others doing this work on the ground across the South West.

At its heart are short, honest audio conversations with people who have been where you are, talking openly about what worked, what didn't, and what kept them going.

In this Rural Changemakers conversation "Rural Community - What's Tricky and What Works?", six people involved in community action across Somerset explore what makes change in rural places difficult, what helps local projects take root, and how shared interests can bring people together. They talk openly about parish councils, local power, trust, overlooked contributions, community events, and the small moments that can grow into something much bigger. We have much more, too. Our free resource library covers a wide range of how to make change in rural areas, co-created with those doing this work on the ground. Hear them on running your first community event, connecting with your GP surgery, enhancing local democracy, engaging your community, and more. Two companion directories sit alongside, gathering the practical things you might need to get things moving - from set-up to fundraising, volunteers, events and more.

Our biggest insight from putting this full library together: while our hard-won village or market town actions can seem small scale, when we join up beyond our local boundaries, they create a much larger force for change.

You may have seen that giant world of plastic waste being carried around Frome last March by the Frome Youth Climate Group. Created by collecting plastic waste from around the town, and working with artist @juliestarks.artist and led by Chris Redmond @chrisredmondmakesstuff Plastic Bones made a statement about how we are treating our planet.

The globe is now installed @healsomerset for the summer in their barn. Huge thanks to @rainybeck and @suepalmer_23 who installed it last week - we hope it survives the windy barn!!

Visiting groups to Heal Somerset can see it close up and be inspired to act by the campaign. Heal are also creating a beautiful mural along one whole side of the barn. The young people will return to Heal to help complete the mural and see Plastic Bones there in October …

Anyone in Frome thinking of hosting another screening of The Peoples Emergency Briefing @nebriefing - maybe in a group, a business, your network of friends, a club, sports organisation?

After the screening in May a small group of people / facilitators / doers got together to offer support to anyone else wanting to host … Tomorrow morning, Friday 24, a couple of people will be in the @cheesegrainfrome cafe from 10am to 12 noon there to chat to anyone who wants to ask questions. Go find them !

Thank you to @abigreenthinks for a positive presentation at July’s Frome Town Council meeting @frometowncouncil about the evaluation, findings and learnings from @greenhealthyfrome and of course that includes Future Shed 💚🌍💬

It’s been interesting, helpful and insightful to see the sum and analysis of the work over the last five years - the impact and the changes that we have seen as a result of our partnership programme focused on climate, health and the cost of living - @edventurefrome @frome.medical.practice and @frometowncouncil

Just look at what Plastic Free Period achieved - a wonderful project managed by Jo from Frome Town Council Resilience Team and Charlotte as the Community Sustainability Lead at Frome Medical Practice - incredible!!! Savings and action across emissions, health and cost. That project continues…

You can read the evaluation report by Abi and Ben from @the_consciousproject - and it is super readable too!! - in full and in summary via the Our Learnings page on the Green and Healthy Frome website.
