Our GREEN GRADS at GREEN GRADS in the NORTH opening next Thursday in Manchester have hugely varying projects to share with you. This is artist
gardener @jasrobertson.art who won this year’s prestigious Sustainability Award at Glasgow School of Art @gsasustainability
In Manchester, she shares the story of the “growing field” she has been tending all summer. It presents three Scottish heritage seeds - Bere Barley, Flax and Black Oats - planted in a striking spiral in her University grounds - from late March to September, with the Flax flowering purple in June and the Barley and Oats turning gold over the month of August. Says Jasmin: “All three seeds tie into the history of Scotland, and are threatened by varieties deemed bigger and better. However they are innately resilient and are better able to adapt to a changing climate.”
She adds: “As an artist, I am entirely focused on how we can expand our connection to the land. My ongoing themes are climate crisis, land rights, seed sovereignty, and similar environmental concerns.” You could not really be a Greener Grad.... by @greengradsuk

Meet @thoratalling Her startlingly original and highly emotive ceramics are what I'm calling "agitpots" - from our GG makers explicitly championing the environment. Thora will be at GREEN GRADS in the NORTH, opening Thurs next week (private view) and running to Sun Oct 18th at Victoria Baths, Manchester (GNCCF @great_northern_events).
Her passionate pictorial pots are a plea for endangered animals and habitats. Recent issues of particular concern include the horrendous donkey skin trade; sea grass regeneration and coral re-growth;, and the illegal trade in Macaques and Slow Loris in Indonesia.
A sledge hammer of detailed research backs every campaign.
A share of Thora's profits go to to wild life charities, such as @greenpeace @savetherhinointernational @thebrookecharity @wwf. She adds QR codes to her work as a link to more info and petitions.
At 63, Thora is a 50+GREEN GRAD. 50+ are our brilliant GGs coming on board in later life. It's a badge of honour
 - no one is designated as such without explicit consent!
Thora graduated from the University of Lancashire @unilancs_ceramics in 2025 - "my only ceramics qualification was an Access B in Ceramics from Kendal College, around 1990." by @greengradsuk

Say hello to GREEN GRAD sculptor @lucyharman_craft who will present Neuroscrap at GREEN GRADS in the NORTH at Victoria Baths, Manchester October 15-18, courtesy of the GNCCF @great_northern_events
Scavenging through scrap yards and garages, Lucy reclaims what others might deem useless junk. “I assemble these discarded fragments like a jigsaw puzzle, fitting each unique shape together. Turning abandoned cutlery, tools, watches, and general metal waste into sculptures brings me a deep sense of empowerment. In every piece of forgotten scrap, I find the absolute joy of total transformation.” A spider has a watch for a body. Overlapping spoons make up a scorpion’s tail. A hawk has feathers of knife blades, and a clock face becomes the body of a fish.
Lucy says that her autism shapes her creative process.” I see potential in what others call broken, working backward to piece together discarded junk. I never forage with something specific in mind but let my curiosity find new stories of beauty in discarded parts.” At our show, she'll have work for sale, including smaller pieces made specially for the event. Go get them while you can: these sculptures are in the best tradition of surrealism and are eminently collectable. by @greengradsuk

DIARY DATES
1. GREEN GRADS in the NORTH, GNCCF, Victoria Baths, Manchester; 15/18 Oct; @great_northern_events
2. GREEN GRADS at YORKTON WORKSHOPS, 1-3 Yorkton Street, E2, 14/15 Nov; @yorktonworkshops

Fast, furious and loadsa laughs: this was SPARK CHANGE part of the SPEAKEASY sessions masterminded last week by @roddyclarkedesign in the murky depths of old Shoreditch town hall; @shoreditchdesignweek @l_d_f_official This was design in the fast lane, with no brakes. We had ten very brave "industry specialists" each with their own little table. Each GREEN GRAD chose one and pitched the basics of their project, getting reactions, advice, inspo, contacts in return. BUT after three mins or so, there was a horrendous buzzer and everyone had to move to a new table. SPEED DESIGN!
Then we had a discussion and the judges shared their reactions: they were actually quite rigorous bordering on harsh, but lots of the GGs said they preferred it that way - "we came to learn and break new ground, not to sit in a warm bath of praise..."
Massive thanks to Roddy for making it possible, and to GG codirector @maczerwinski - both of whom also manned tables. Thx to the security guy who stepped in to move everyone on...
And then to our other professional judges: @jamesmair10 of @viaduct, @danheathstudio @sihamilton747 @becky_earley @elladorandesigner Kirsty of @priestmangoode @emilyskinneruk @carotill of @tilt_futures
AND to the stalwart GGs - in front of first pic is Jo Gurr who brought his beautiful biomaterials. Also taking part @kaitocrafts @irisreed.design @eva.xiste Gabriel Barnett, @freyaholmestextiles @leger_ant @audrey.c.levy Mobina @biorecursive @aepclark

Rachel @kaitocrafts was something of a star at SPARK CHANGE, our frenetic "speed design" event created by @roddyclarkedesign for @shoreditchdesignweek She brought the beautiful book and colour samples that support her project "Textile Botanica: the One Pot Colour System." Using local, foraged and rescued plant materials, Rachel extends colour from a single dye bath into lake pigments, art media, print and knitted textiles.
Sustainability is paramount. A dye bath is no longer single-use but transforms and extends its colour through different materials and applications. “It combines craft, research and ecological thinking in a practical circular colour system.” Do check out her website for fascinating fuller details
Rachel will be at GREEN GRADS in the North, at the GNCCF (Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair) at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road, ManchesterM13 0FE; 15/18 October; by @greengradsuk

GREEN GRADS' show producer Michael @studioczerwinski came to support @clairemalleyart whose workshop yesterday hosted by @ldfsohodistrict and @surfacethinking was a huge success. (GG founder/curator @sunnygran was there taking the pics as ever...) Around a large table dedicated weavers quietly and methodically turned all kinds of textile and yarn waste into beautiful little artworks, using the paper looms Claire so cleverly makes up in advance. Now they've learned this craft, they can repeat it at home. Next stop for ten GREEN GRADS @l_d_f_official is Thursday 17th @shoreditchdesignweek at a12.30 Speakeasy session with @roddyclarkedesign We're doing "speed design" with each GG pitching to an industry expert for 5 mins then all change! It will be HUGE fun with masse of info, inspo - and possibly a lot of laughs. Do come and watch from the sidelines!

for @rosiewilliamsceramics :
CONGRATULATIONS to dear Rosie (one of our very first GREEN GRADS) and @jchanceramics, on the birth of their daughter Maggie Chan
I met Rosie when scouting for my very first GREEN GRADS cohort at Design Crafts at De Monfort University in 2021. Her Plastic Species were imagined ceramic “fossils of the future, ” with sea creatures embedded with deadly streaks of plastic...“see here a large fossilised fish strangled by fishing line and tangled trash…an example of how ghost fishing equipment lost at sea affects the ocean’s marine life” by @greengradsuk

After a brief pause for breath, GREEN GRADS is now focusing on securing talent for our two autumn shows. 1. GREEN GRADS in the NORTH @great_northern_events – our FIFTH edition at the GNCCF, Manchester, 15-18 October. 2. GREEN GRADS at YORKTON WORKSHOPS, Hackney, @yorktonworkshops sponsored by @pearsonlloyd 14/15 November.
In the picture: we met Emily @emilygwendoline_design in early July @newdesigners.
She is exploring the potential of fibres derived from regenerative crops such as flax and hemp. To demonstrate this, she’s made naturally-dyed woven mats using hemp fibres, to be used outdoors while walking, camping or gardening – “it’s so important to have organic materials for natural activities.”
She is learning more about growing the materials by volunteering at the @contemporaryhempery, a farm working with the land to regenerate the soil – “I’m super excited about this.” She then hopes to set up her own small workshop to carrying on making and starting to sell her work
Emily’s final project was called “Working towards a regenerative textiles practice that supports and connects the land, natural cycles and people.” Couldn’t be more GREEN GRAD! @hcatextiles thx @mandyrolandsmith for tip-off! by @greengradsuk

because today's graduates are tomorrow's planet...
Molly White @m.w__designs (who showed with @textiledesignfalmouth @newdesigners) is pushing biomaterials to their technical and artistic limits. Her home near Faversham and Canterbury is surrounded by orchards, hop fields and vineyards in the so-called Garden of England - sunny, sheltered, fertile Kent with a unique microclimate climate that supports many crops, fruit and vegetables. Here, for example, is grown 90% of England’s cherries and 50% of its plums. However with farming, waste occurs. Molly has compiled a beautiful magazine called The Garden of England (TGOE) – you can flip through its pages on her Instagram feed. It documents in riveting details her seemingly endless experiments with local farming waste to construct, colour and print an extensive fabric portfolio of bio materials and natural fibres, using many different techniques including screen printing, cyanotype and laser engraving. by @greengradsuk

because today's graduates are tomorrow's planet...
Recycling cardboard consumes energy and chemicals...and weakens fibres until they cannot be used. So why not catch the card before it gets pulped? That's the thinking behind Antoine's CardWich @antoinemehdi.eladib A simple process flattens sheets of corrugated card, bonds layers together with a water-based starch and applies pressure at low heat. The resulting boards are strong, lightweight, and biodegradable. Antoine has also been experimenting with textures and patterns. "It's not the strongest material in the workshop and doesn't aim to be. Its strength lies in its accessibility. It can be produced locally from waste already in circulation, using simple tools and minimal energy." by @greengradsuk
