Day 4 of my #COP28 Experience, 3rd December, 2023.

My day 4 at COP28, Dubai began with the YOUNGO meeting at the Blue Zone where the Global Youth Statement on Loss and Damage was presented alongside a held panel session.

Three key questions from the panel session were:
1. What do we want out of the Loss and Damage Fund for human mobility?
2. How can we finance regular, safe and orderly daily migration/mobility of people affected by Loss and Damage?
3. How do we make sure the voices of migrants are heard?

Youth from around the world shared their concerns on Loss on Damage. Some of the statement from young people at the meeting were:
🧍🏾‍♀️By not taking decisive action, global leaders are violating human rights.
🧍🏾Loss and Damage consultation processes should include young people in local communities and indigenous people.
🧍🏼‍♀️These consultation should also be inclusive of evacuation plans, strategies and measures.
🧍🏼Ensuring Loss and Damage emergency preparedness are designed to meet the needs and demands of everyone affected.
👫🏼As youths, we need to act locally, we should constantly ask ourselves, "what can we do for our communities that are affected, how will the impacts in my community move on to become global change?"
👫🏿 We need to start thinking on how young people in diaspora can advocate for the people and challenges faced in their home countries.
👫 Finally, more spaces need to be created for young people in decision making and negotiation rooms especially in respect to Loss and Damage issues.

I was really delighted to meet my friend from Nigeria @patrick_amaibi who presented the Global Youth Statement on Loss and Damage and was a panelist at the meeting.

I also got connected to Eemmanuel Emechete who was part of the @youngo.unfccc Media Team at COP28 and was also a panelist at the meeting.

More updates on my Day 4 Experience at COP28, Dubai, will be coming up on my next post. Stay tuned!

Day 1 of My @cop28uaeofficial Experience. 30th Nov., 2023.

The highlight of my first day at COP, was representing @ysdn_official at the round table dinner discussion organized for some youth leaders across various continent of the world, by the Prime Minister of the Netherlands – @minpres the Prime Minister of Curacao – Gilmar Pisas and the Climate Envoy of the Netherlands – Jaime de Bourbon de Parme

At the round table discussion, these 3 questions where the highlight of the conversations, as young leaders shared stories from their countries, their climate action & experiences and what roles the Netherlands can take on these round of questions below:

Round 1: Global Inequality. The richest 1% of the world is responsible for twice as many emissions as the poorest half of the global population: how do you think we should combat this inequality? What responsibility does the Netherlands carry?

Round 2: Loss & Damage. At COP 28, the historic decision for a loss & damage fund needs to be operationalized, but negotiations are tough. What role should the Netherlands take on to ensure the operationalization of the Loss & Damage Fund?

Round 3: Fossil Phase-Out. We are not on track for 1.5 degrees global warming. How can we ensure a global fossil fuel phase-out needed to achieve emission reduction targets? How do we get out of the Mannheim & Montreal conventions that ban taxes on kerosene & shipping fuels?

On the topic of loss & damage fund, I shared the stories of the frontline communities who are mostly affected with the heat of the climate change crisis, amplifying an example of the flood event which affected most states of my country, Nigeria in 2022, especially those of South-South, the East and some areas of the West, & the need for the operationalization of the Loss & Damage Fund for these communities.

On the topic of fossil phase-out & achieving emission reduction targets, it’s a pleasure to pinpoint the role the Youth Sustainable Development Network has taken on to ensure emission reduction in Nigeria, such as the “Farmers Solar Irrigation Project” which was implemented in Lagos State Nigeria & our just won coolcycle project geared towards the zero emiss taken in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by @ib_henshaw

Technology is powerful, but without data, there’s no story.

At #DARE2026, Ibiso shares why data matters and that beyond the tools we build, the stories we tell must be backed by evidence.

For this year's Global Week of Climate Action and ahead of COP 31, I have imagined:

-What level of progress the world could make when global crisis are powered by finance and not mere promises.

-What fairness and justice could translate to when indigenous people are not left behind.

-What ocean goods and services (carbon sinks, trade and maritime systems) could achieve when the oceans are not ignored.

-What food security and healthy living could look like when agriculture, and clean water are treated as necessities not luxuries.

-What transformation could look like when climate affected communities are restored, if loss and damage is treated as debt rather than charity.

-What migration and mobility could look like when clean transport is not treated as luxury but as climate action.

-What a climate-safe future could look like if we start treating it as our current reality, and fix climate finance now.

Climate action must be just, inclusive, locally led, and globally financed. There is no more time for rhetoric; we must move from promises to tangible, result-driven actions.

It was such a valuable time of review and reflection at the Close-Out Workshop of Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN) for the Project, "Maximizing the Potential of Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) in the Niger Delta".

Over the last 24 months, SDN through this project has worked with HCDTs, the regulators, legislators, settlors, civil society organizations, host communities across Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States to strengthen the governance, transparency, and accountability of HCDTs established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

Being engaged as one of the stakeholders in this project, and assessing the Project Evaluation Findings and Reports presented by the MEARL Officer, I am delighted at the work SDN has done and the achievements recorded.

Some notable achievements from this project are;
- Establishment & implementation of an independent monitoring, reporting and evaluation platform (I-HCDT) https://lnkd.in/eu7gfnnz
- Improvement of host community members awareness and knowledge on the provisions of chapter 3 of the PIA.
- Improved connection and interaction between host communities, settlors and NUPRC.
- Human Capital Development (Education, Scholarship & Training) which cumulatively had the highest percentage of host communities benefit.

However, Employment Opportunities ranked the 5th lowest benefit of the HCDT fund from their research. At the workshop, I raised concerns on the need to fix the issues of employment opportunities across host communities, as I shared with stakeholders in attendance strategies through which this challenge can be fixed. I also shared insights on how an increase in employment opportunities can contribute to other areas of development for the communities.

It is crucial to highlight that an HCDT can exist without delivering impactful projects when confronted with systemic challenges. And systemic challenges are not addressed by research or advocacy alone, but require strong policy intervention. There is need for the ammendment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), in order to address certain gaps and challenges that stifles the progress and delivery of impactful projects by host communities. by @ib_henshaw

For years, young people have shown commitment to advancing climate action in their communities and across Nigeria. Though their actions have been significant and tangible, yet lacked coordination as they have worked in silos. This fragmentation in the system is costing us; - The inclusion of youth as key partners in climate governance across agencies and institutions in Nigeria
- Duplicated programs and projects in the same communities.
- Missed opportunities to collaborate, save cost and scale impact.

I read an insightful Newsletter from Barrister Augusta Shahin Esq. on "Who Negotiates Nigeria’s Investment Treaties? Why That Answer Matters for Climate."

https://sustainablejusticenotes.substack.com/p/who-negotiates-nigerias-investment?r=h2gyn&utm_medium=ios&shareImageVariant=split

She highlighted critical gaps that has affected Nigeria’s Climate and Investment Negotiations; fragmentation, limited access to document/signed treaties, a BIT model amongst others.

But reading through that newsletter I saw a greater challenge, "The lack of a futuristic lens" by the assigned Committee and institutions, and more so a collapse in administrative continuity, not just in personnel but how institutions operate and plan. This is why we need coordination across demographics- youth, women, and men- as well as across agencies and institutions.

How do we plan for the future without the very people who are the future?

To achieve a Futuristic lens into any system the takeover generation must be at the table. Not as observers, validators or an afterthought. But as members of committees and institutions, from conception to implementation- with the same access, resources and benefits afforded to previous generations.

That is how we ensure foresight. That is how we ensure continuity.

That's why we are building a coalition. To break the silos, foster collaboration, and position young people as key partners in Nigeria's NDC process.

Join us for the launch of Nigeria NDC Youth Coalition @ndcycoalition Tomorrow, 22nd August 2026, 11am WAT.

Because climate action needs coordination. And governance needs the youth at the table.

I attended an intensive 1 week NDC Youth Champions Program for youth leaders which was held in Lagos, Nigeria, and organized by @actionaidnigeria in partnership with @inspiredyouthnetwork

The workshop under the theme: "Strengthening Youth-Led Climate Governance and Policy Influence on Nigeria's NDC Implementation", empowered youth with knowledge and skills across topics such as; Decarbonization and Energy Transition, Sectoral Analysis of Nigeria's NDC 3.0, Climate Finance, Domestic Resource Mobilization and Climate Responsive Budgeting in Nigeria, Accountability Mechanisms for the NDCs, Climate Policy Advocacy, Digital Advocacy and Story Telling, to mention a few.

The sessions were practical and engaging. And more importantly they are pivotal for youth in leading meaningful action, holding leaders accountable and demanding change.

One of the things that stood out for me in the course of the workshop is the different circumstances shared which gave credence to the action carried out by young people, and also revealed that though we have different contexts our aspirations are the same.

This reflects the theme of this year's International Youth Day, "Different Context, Common Aspirations".

As we commemorate today, the #InternationalYouthDay, I celebrate every young person who is not just with aspirations to change the world, but who are turning pain into action, and problems into solutions.

Young people not just the future. We are the pivotal present.

Let’s invest in youth leadership, fund youth development programs, and put young voices at every decision table.

Thank you to ActionAid Nigeria and Inspired Youth Network for investing in young people.

Happy International Youth Day!

I attended the National Young People’s Convening on NDC 3.0 organized by @actionaidnigeria in partnership with @giz_nigeria_ecowas held in Abuja, Nigeria.

The convening brought together youth representatives from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to build understanding of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and to review the third submission, (NDC 3.0), to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

During the meeting facilitated by Timothy Ogenyi and Abu Stephen, we examined:
- Nigeria’s climate reality
- Sectors and cross-cutting issues
- Youth and climate governance
- Climate finance and youth engagement
- Accountability and monitoring
- What a just transition means for young people

We also developed youth priorities and recommendations to guide the implementation of NDC 3.0 across all sectors outlined in the document.

A key outcome of the convening was the formation of the "Nigeria NDC Youth Coalition" — a network of young people committed to active participation in the achievement of Nigeria’s NDCs. @ndcycoalition
As a member of the Steering Committee, I look forward to championing youth engagement in the implementation of Nigeria’s NDC.

As we prepare for the official launch of the coalition, kindly follow our social media pages to stay updated on the launch date, membership details, and upcoming opportunities. 👇🏾
