An amazing day at the 2nd Annual Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture and Award Series, organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps, with the theme: “The Imperative of State Police: Securing Communities, Strengthening Federalism.”

The Guest Lecturer, Mr. Nnadubem Moghalu, Secretary of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, shared insightful reflections on police response, community security and the ongoing process towards a dual policing system in Nigeria.

One key takeaway: policing reform is not only a government conversation, it is a citizens’ conversation.

Our communities deserve a policing system that is responsive, accountable and capable of addressing the realities of insecurity.

Let’s stay informed, ask questions and constructively engage in shaping the future of policing in Nigeria.

A new journey begins!

I am extremely pleased and excited to announce my Individual Grant Award for the 2026 cycle of the Youth Leadership Development Fund, supported by the Nigerian Youth Futures Fund (NYFF).

My project, “Strengthening Grassroots Governance Through Community Scorecards and Youth-Led Social Accountability in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC),” is focused on creating meaningful opportunities for young people across AMAC’s 12 wards to participate in governance and monitor local development and public service delivery.

Through community scorecards, we will document community experiences, identify service-delivery gaps, highlight positive performance, and generate evidence that can support constructive dialogue between residents and the AMAC administration.

This means a lot to me.

It is another step towards my commitment to engaging young people in governance processes at the local council level and advancing the Nigeria We Want, a Nigeria where young people are not just beneficiaries of governance, but active participants in shaping the communities they call home.

The future is ours to embrace. And building it requires our participation, our voices, and our commitment to accountability.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project unfolds across AMAC.

The world is full of chaos.
So why hate? Why war?

Why not invest in peace?

Peace begins with the choices we make, in our homes, communities, institutions, and across borders.

Let’s choose dialogue over division.
Understanding over hatred.
Peace over conflict.

Invest in peace — for everyone, everywhere, every day.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and so it was when my community began to take on a different outlook following the demolition activities and massive road transformation in 2025.

I had mixed feelings about the road construction, mindful of the satellite town and its inhabitants whose livelihoods were disrupted in the process of development in the Gishiri Community.

Today, however, my community has taken on a new outlook, with bustling activities, emerging hubs, and businesses creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs to leverage the newly constructed road network to provide essential goods and services to residents.

This transformation is a testament to the impact that infrastructure development can have on communities, livelihoods, and local economic opportunities.

I am grateful to witness this change and the new possibilities it continues to create for young people and residents of Gishiri Community, courtesy of the developmental agenda of the FCT Development Authority, the Honourable Minister of the FCT, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

From disruption to transformation, every road can become a pathway to opportunity.

A saying goes "A stitch in time saves nine"

I and other young leaders of the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety (YOURS) paid a collaborative visit to the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

The visit followed the high-level ministerial commitment on road safety and the Decade of Action for Road Safety, particularly the commitment made by the Honourable Minister of Youth Development to integrate road safety into the National Youth Policy. This commitment was also reflected in the Global Youth Statement on Road Safety, led by YOURS.

The meeting with the Corps Marshal provided a strategic opportunity to present and discuss the policy brief in greater detail, while exploring opportunities for collaboration with the FRSC to support the implementation of its recommendations.

At YOURS, we recognise that the FRSC possesses critical technical expertise and remains a key stakeholder in advancing road safety in Nigeria. This makes collaboration essential to ensuring that the integration of road safety into the National Youth Policy is not merely symbolic, but substantive, practical, and actionable.

The engagement marks an important step towards strengthening youth participation in road safety advocacy and ensuring that the voices and priorities of young people are reflected in Nigeria's road safety policies and interventions.

In response to the presentation by our team Lead, the Corps Marshal reiterated his commitment to working with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to ensure that road safety for young people is reflected in the Nigerian National Youth Policy, with the aim of addressing road safety concerns and promoting empowerment opportunities for the youthful population in Nigeria.

He further expressed his delight at the opportunity to work collaboratively with YOURS to ensure that this commitment is achieved. He also spoke about upcoming FRSC programmes and initiatives for road users, aimed at promoting safety and reducing road-related risks across different regions of Nigeria.

Interesting conversations and valuable perspectives at the Stakeholder Validation Session on “Expanding Legislative Participation Through Technology-Enabled Public Hearings in Nigeria,” organised by Tunani Initiative.

In my contribution, I emphasised that citizens can constructively participate in legislative processes and amplify their voices beyond the four walls of legislative chambers across Nigeria.

Technology has evolved, and as a nation, we must leverage it thoughtfully to strengthen civic engagement, inclusive participation, and democratic governance.

I drew insights from Kaduna State, which has adopted hybrid approaches to citizen participation during town halls, allowing citizens to join remotely and contribute their views.

I believe technology-enabled public hearings are achievable with the right political buy-in, institutional commitment, and willingness to embrace innovation. The Taiwan model also provides useful lessons on how technology can expand citizens’ participation in governance and policymaking.

The future of citizen participation is increasingly digital. Nigeria must be intentional about using technology to bring citizens closer to the legislative process.

Over the past three days, I had the privilege of representing I am Change Organisation at the Civic Space Protection & Regulatory Compliance Training under the Civic Space Resource Hub for Civil Society Organisations in West Africa (Cohort IV), supported by the @fordfoundation

The training provided a comprehensive learning experience on the evolving civic space landscape and the regulatory environment for civil society organisations. We explored civic space and fundamental freedoms, media freedom, personal data protection, digital technologies, advocacy strategies, and the importance of creating an enabling environment for civil society.

We also examined the legal and regulatory obligations of nonprofit organisations in Nigeria, including compliance requirements with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), NFIU reporting obligations, SCUML, and the implications of recent tax reforms for civil society organisations. The final day deepened our understanding of advanced regulatory compliance, corporate governance, data protection, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF) frameworks, emphasizing the importance of strong internal controls and accountability.

This experience has reinforced my commitment to strengthening institutional compliance at I am Change Organisation. I look forward to cascading these learnings to our Executive Director and colleagues, particularly our Finance team, to review compliance gaps, improve due diligence processes, and reinforce sound governance practices. Maintaining an active and effective Board of Trustees with clear succession and rotational tenure is one of the key actions we intend to prioritize.

My sincere appreciation goes to the West Africa Civil Society Institute, the Civic Space Resource Hub, the facilitators, and fellow participants for creating a rich platform for learning, reflection, and collaboration. As civic space continues to evolve, building resilient, accountable, and compliant civil society organisations remains essential to sustaining democratic participation and public trust.

Day 2 of the Civic Space Protection & Regulatory Compliance Training (Cohort IV), organized by the Civic Space Resource Hub in partnership with the West Africa Civil Society Institute, was both insightful and enlightening.

The facilitators delved deeper into advocacy, creating an enabling environment for civil society, and the regulatory foundations that shape the nonprofit sector.

We also gained practical insights into running a nonprofit in Nigeria, including key compliance obligations with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) reporting requirements, and SCUML. The sessions further unpacked the recently signed tax reforms, highlighting the opportunities available to Civil Society Organizations and the importance of proper documentation, personal income tax compliance, and other statutory tax obligations.

The knowledge gained will strengthen our commitment to promoting accountability, good governance, and regulatory compliance while advancing our mission of empowering communities.
