Text post with red background and white text: The words on the cover of this issue of The Socialist urge readers to Vote Out the Government and Build a Socialist Alternative. This is a call to action: a call against abstentionism from voting, and crucially, towards a view of politics where voting once every three years is a minuscule portion of one’s political activity. Heading into the 2026 General Election, the wish at the forefront of the majority of the working class is quite simply: we need to change the government. We need to vote out the right-wing bloodsuckers who are preying on Māori, on women workers, and the working class as a whole. And they’re right to want this. The current coalition government is fiercely reactionary, and its base is made of wealthy capitalists who want nothing more than to see an increasingly desperate pool of workers who will fight amongst themselves for the scraps of the wealth that they themselves produce. Text post with red background and white text: Binning the current parasitic lot may only introduce a spineless batch of “centrists,” but a centrist government which sees workers as at least part of their political base, and will occasionally act to appease that base, will shift the conditions under which we organise in our favour. Not far, perhaps, but given that our task is to organise a fragmented and atomised vanguard of the working class, we ought to take any action that can shift our line forward, however modest. Any meaningful change will be built by the social movements that can grow and challenge the restraints of those conditions. Capitalism is a system of crisis, exploitation and war in which production is for profit - not for human need. Although workers create society’s wealth, they have no control over its production or distribution. A new society can only be built when workers collectively seize control of that wealth and create a new state in which they will make the decisions about the economy, social life and the environment.

Text: As the centre-left and the right contend for parliamentary power in the 2026 general election, people living in New Zealand, especially the working class, are broadly dissatisfied. Despite this, revolution is not on the minds of the majority. New Zealand capitalism recently has been, by capitalist standards, fairly stable, with no major crises or upheavals. Class struggle is low. The unions are weak, highly cautious, and are overly influenced by the right-wing Labour Party. Internationally, and increasingly at home, the far right explains the deprivations of capitalism, with racism, bigotry, anti-migration, and even anti-socialist rhetoric. In doing so, they turn ordinary people against each other, annihilating solidarity and making capitalist exploitation easier. The socialist left, tiny and fragmented, is in no position to get our message out, let alone offer a serious political alternative. In this climate, it should come as no surprise that many do not feel that a fundamentally better world is possible. Fewer still have an understanding of socialism and believe revolution is necessary or even on the table. Text: Capitalism is unsustainable. Capitalism is the system which fundamentally governs every country across the globe. It is a system of class domination and rule. A system where a tiny minority, the capitalists, get rich through owning and controlling production and property. They own large businesses, supermarkets, mines, factories, offices, and pay workers far less than the value they themselves generate. Then there are capitalists in non-productive markets, such as landlords, who hoard and restrict access to housing and land, extorting rent. Both sustain their class position through the exploitat Red graphic of silhouette of revolutionaries. Text: “Revolution in New Zealand” by @isoaotearoa

ISO Coordinating Committee member @oscar_bartle on @chloe.swarbrick's recent interview with @2youngtovote. The full interview can be found on the 2youngtovote YouTube and elsewhere.

None of this is to say don't vote green. The greens are a very supportable option, and we have to kick this government out. What we are saying is that presently all the parties represent one or the other brand of capitalism. We're saying that voting can't be the extent of our political activity, and we need to build a socialist alternative.

Text: From 1853 until 1993, New Zealanders participating in national elections cast their vote under a First Past the Post (FPP) system, in which each voter chose their preferred candidate for the electorate they lived in. The “winner” of the election was the party that won the most electorates, even if they had not gotten a majority of the vote on a national level. There has been a consistent feeling in Aotearoa that FPP led to a government that strangled smaller parties and was not representative of the people. In 1887, a bill was put forward to institute a Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, where each person votes in the form of a ranked ballot. From 1908 to 1913, candidates had to get over 50 percent of the vote in their electorate to be elected. In their 1916 founding constitution, the Labour Party advocated for proportional representation, but this facet of their platform was quietly phased out when they started becoming successful under FPP in the 1930s. Text: The National Party is the principal partner in this three-way unnatural disaster that is the current governing coalition of New Zealand. The Party’s website claims its focus is on “fixing the basics and building the future.” We might reasonably ask: what are these “basics” that they’re claiming to be “fixing”? Basic humanity, perhaps? If only. The United Nations has a “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” document, adopted in 1948, which it claims sets out “fundamental human rights to be universally protected.” We certainly can criticise the United Nations for a great many things, but in fairness this document contains some decent and positive statements which we’d agree with – such as “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.” And “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” And “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.” Header text: “international socialist organisation aotearoa.” Red footer with website (iso.org.nz) and ISO logo on the right.

Text: Terms we might reasonably consider to be some of “the basics” of human life and dignity, and, given that New Zealand is a member of the UN, a part of the international framework to which you’d expect our government would subscribe. This coalition government came to power very shortly after the 7 October 2023 events that led to a three-year (and still counting) sustained onslaught against the people of Gaza which has quite clearly been, and continues to be, a genocide. What has this government done? According to John Hobbs, writing for E-Tangata, “The New Zealand government has remained silent on the issue Red tinted image of a building in Gaza surrounded by smoke.
