CALL TO ACTION: SUBMIT AGAINST THE CONSERVATION AMENDMENT BILL 🌿

The National Govt wants to put our conservation land up for sale, make the priority of DOC profit rather than protection, and open the doors wide for foreign mining giants and billionaires to exploit and extract from our beautiful whenua.

This should concern you all, whether you enjoy recreation in the outdoors (tramping, camping, fishing, hunting, climbing, 4wding, and so on), care for future generations, or care for the environment and our native species, then this bill impacts you!

It only takes a few minutes to submit against the bill on the parliamentary website, read @forestandbird information on it, sign the @greenpeacenz petition, or email your local MP.

But we need to do more than that… this bill has not emerged from one bad egg or random chance, it’s the product of a economic & political system that inherently prioritises profit over all else, exploitation & extraction over people and planet. This is capitalism in action.

While we continue to ignore the systemic causes of horrific bills such as this, they will continue to come up time and time again, billionaires and offshore mining giants will continue to be prioritised over protecting our beautiful whenua and our people time and time again. I urge you to get politically educated and engaged, to build a meaningful base to challenge the capitalist system.

This doesn’t have to be hard, I have included links to some wonderful organisations in Aotearoa you can start by getting involved with, as well as some political education resources. Listen to podcasts on the way to mahi, connect with a local organisation, check you are enrolled and turn up to vote for a party that will protect people & planet this election 💚

It’s so heartening to see so many different outdoors groups & influencers speak up against this bill, thank you all for your mahi! We need to talk about politics more though, beyond just one bill. Because this is the consequence, this is just one example of why it matters no matter what activities you enjoy.

Kia kaha ✊

Ps. stay away from our conservation land @nznationalparty 🤮

Today we mourn the loss of Marjane Satrapi, a remarkable writer, artist, filmmaker, and fearless voice for freedom whose work touched millions around the world.

Through her groundbreaking graphic memoir Persepolis and her other works, including Persepolis 2, Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and Woman, Life, Freedom, Satrapi brought the stories of ordinary Iranians to a global audience with honesty, courage, humour, and humanity. She challenged simplistic narratives about Iran and showed the world the richness, complexity, and resilience of Iranian society.

Satrapi was more than an author. She was an outspoken advocate for human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression. She used her platform to stand with those facing repression and injustice, and she never stopped speaking out against authoritarianism.

Her work inspired generations of readers to look beyond stereotypes and to recognise the shared humanity of people living under oppression.

On 4 June 2026, Marjane Satrapi died at the age of 56. According to her family, she passed away after a period of profound grief following the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa, a loss from which she never fully recovered.

Her passing is a profound loss, but her legacy lives on in her art, her words, and the courage she inspired in others. Through her books, her activism, and her unwavering commitment to justice, she ensured that the voices of Iranians fighting for freedom would be heard around the world.

Rest in peace, Marjane Satrapi.
