East End Echoes Vol. 1 out now, everywhere, via @alkabil.audio
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Spent this incredible August immersed in sound design at 𝕃𝕒𝕓𝕤𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕥𝕚𝕔 𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕜𝕤𝕙𝕠𝕡 with Prof. King Britt @kingbritt , Myles Ortiz-Green @mylesortizgreen , J.E. Hernández @jehernandezhtx , Scarlett Shi @scarlett_shihi, Ava Deluca @avaadelucaa, Aditya Kumar @adityakumaaaar, as well as Timothy Gmeiner @illpoetic513 , who we wish could have stayed with us through August.

Building on the samples the team collected at Beat Box Records and the Vintage Synth Museum, we locked in for the whole month and made sound with new tools, new workflows, and new inspirations from one another, letting the flow continue to shape our creation and connection.

This summer has already become an unforgettable experience of learning and collaboration at @ucsdmusic. In the studio, we designed an all-connected routing system that allows us to freely connect different instruments and devices. With @ableton Link and a customized routing tool, we enabled independent sound routing across multiple computers, allowing us to move between different integrated jamming setups, exchange audio and control signals, and share the results and inspirations of our sound design in real time.

As King said on the last day: “This is an end and a start.” Grateful to have been part of 𝕃𝕒𝕓𝕤𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕥𝕚𝕔 this summer, and to everyone who made it such a special space for experimentation and exchange.

To be continued. by @jehernandezhtx

Today, we’re highlighting the MAP-funded project Sihǐl! This project is being created by J.E. Hernández, Priscella Uvalle, and J. Mae Barizo.

This transformative cuicatl-opera project illuminates the often-overlooked Indigenous pre-Hispanic roots of Mexican culture, focusing on the visceral, maternal bond and its cultural implications.

Our 2024 grant cycle was the largest to date—awarding $2.883 million to 93 projects. You can learn more about our current grant cycle at the link in our bio.

On September 20th - with enormous help - East End Echoes was launched. The project is a sound walk - a permanent installation in the area now called the “Historic East End” by the city of Houston. This works marks more of my work in the experimental design realm. The walk is accessible on the website: eastendechoes.com

The work is comprised of musical cells that interweave interviews by residents of that area. The idea is that, over time, more interviews and more musical cells will be added until the whole map is filled.

I chose this medium after experiencing different sound walks elsewhere in the United States, being drawn to their potential as a medium for storytelling. After conducting, compiling and editing the interviews (which are anonymous) I then composed, edited and put the music together with the help of Michael Silva.

This work is only possible thanks to the fantastic musicians involved, tagged in this video. The audio used here is a preview from one of the tracks, with accompanying footage shot by me.

More can be learned on the website for the project (eastendechoes.com).

We are thrilled to present a world premiere of Paloma (2020) by Mexican-born and Houston based composer J.E. Hernández on Thursday, November 2nd, the first evening of our Futuros, New Ideas in Composition series, as part of the program The Ivalas Quartet will present. Hernández embraces both traditional and multi-disciplinary mediums, and he has collaborated with directors, choreographers, and playwrights. He stewards tangible life experiences through an intensive, multi-narrative process that is mathematical, philosophical, and historical, including environmental displacement, anthropologic self-assessments, and non-artistic life narratives.

Recent and upcoming projects include helah, a chamber work focusing on the transformative aspect of generational historicity and trauma commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera 🔸 Voces Fantasmas, a multi-disciplinary work dedicated to people in immigrant facilities, which premiered at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston on September 2021, excerpts of which were featured by the Kennedy Center for the Arts 🔸 Desert Shelter, a piece for string sextet and dance which deals with the bodily decay that migrants experience when crossing the Sonoran desert, premiering at the Wortham Theater in 2023 🔸 a McKnight Visiting Composer Residency with American Composers Forum 🔸 and a fellowship with American Opera Project’s Composers & the Voice program, where he will workshop a wide variety of operatic works with world class singers, culminating in a premiere.

“HELAH” (Yucatec Maya: “transfiguration”) premiered on May 18, 2023 at the Rothko Chapel ( @rothko_chapel ), with touching and visceral performances by Priscella Uvalle ( @priscella_uvalle ) (who also provided scenic direction), and Cecy Duarte ( @cecilia_duarte_mezzo_soprano ). The work is a cuicatl-opera dialogistic work that takes place out of space and time; an indigenous mother from México dies while giving birth to a Mestiza daughter, using her last moment to imagine what her daughter will be like. Her daughter, aging beyond her mother’s lifespan, does the same.

The work uses a poem written by Tlaltecatzin of Cuauhchinanco, passed down in “classical” Nahuatl, as the skeleton upon which the work builds its musculature and flesh. The experience is then this scene.

Cuicatl is a term that literally means “song” in Nahuatl, more or less. It encompasses many things, and this work is a way to explore the relationship of this pre-conquest art form (recently revived by Gabriel Pareyón), and Euro-American opera, which I am now trained in. This marks the first time that this type of art form has ever been performed on U.S. soil, and the first time that Tlatecatzin’s poem has been activated this way. The work was originally commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera.

Please contact me if you wish to know more about this work. Costuming was made by the very talented Lila Méndez @lilight.lila .

Last clip from “Desert Shelter.” Here we see dancer Jacob Regan ( @flyingfloorward ) creating a harrowing visual with sand. NobleMotion ( @noblemotiondance ) created such accurately biting depictions of what it means to cross the Sonoran Pass for hundreds of thousands of people. Fantastic work. Sublime playing and performance via the Ponce Project ( @ponceproject ).

Thanks to Performing Arts Houston ( @performingartshouston ) for centering these kinds of stories.

Another clip from “Desert Shelter”. Heavy emphasis on the noise characteristics and potential of the string family on full display here. Mitchell Wright ( @mtchwrigt ) absolutely crushing this technique generally referred to as “slow motion bowing”. Of course amazing work by dancers with NobleMotion Dance ( @noblemotiondance ) enhancing and embracing the grueling nature of the Sonoran Desert pass.

Thankful to our great musicians and Ponce Project ( @ponceproject ), our conductor Sheila del Bosque ( @sheiladecuba ) and the excellent dancers. Of course again to Performing Arts Houston ( @performingartshouston ) for believing in the work!

Excerpt from the premiere of my work “Desert Shelter” in collaboration with NobleMotion Dance ( @noblemotiondance ) and the Ponce Project Foundation ( @ponceproject ) . The stunning choreography was made by Andy and Dionne Noble, and the music was conducted by the impeccably talented Sheila del Bosque ( @sheiladecuba ). The work told the story of decay that bodies undergo for people who cross the Sonoran Desert. The performance was at the Wortham Theater ( @worthamcenter ).

The work was originally commissioned by Performing Arts Houston ( @performingartshouston ) as part of their “New/Now” commissioning initiative. They have been incredibly supportive and I am supremely thankful to them.

Stunning performance and choreography by Genene Wallis-McGrath ( @neen_bop ) working in tandem with pianist Alisiya Boiko ( @alisiyaboiko ) for “Double Refraction” by composer J.E. Hernández ( @jehernandezhtx ). The work explores the relationship of social technologies and our bodies. Equally stunning lighting work done by @likeyouknowwhatever1 .

Here, Genene shows off the power of the @instrumentsofthings SOMI-1 bands, working to merge sound and movement in one alongside music being produced by Alisiya. Also at display are the @mi.mu.gloves working to give even more autonomy and power to the body. Simply stunning.

Featuring drum samples/interpolations by Mount Eerie.
