Eternity or experience?

Developed with @12butterflies.am and formulated by @osmio76studio the fragrance conceived for @amyrevier Attunement takes its inspiration from a blend the artist prepared during her residency to protect her woven works.

The new formulation seeks to capture the olfactory impression of that original blend, while incorporating UV protection designed to slow its degradation over time. Sealed inside Revier’s hand-blown glass birds, the fragrance is conceived to remain preserved, potentially forever, echoing the ancient Roman Colombina di Rovasenda whose contents survived for nearly two millennia.

Like the original vessel, the glass birds hold a scent that can only be released through an irreversible gesture: breaking the tail. Preservation and disappearance thus become inseparable, as the possibility of experiencing the fragrance depends on accepting its fading through the breakage of the bird's glass tale.

At the origin of Attunement is the Colombina di Rovasenda, an ancient Roman bird-shaped glass vessel dating to the first century AD, preserved at the Museo di Antichità in Turin.

Bird-shaped unguentaria were used to contain scented substances and are often associated with funerary rituals. Their contents could be released by breaking the narrow glass tail, an irreversible gesture that transformed the vessel and its contents.

What makes the Colombina di Rovasenda particularly remarkable is the survival of traces of its original contents, offering a rare opportunity to investigate an ancient fragrance preserved for nearly two millennia.

For Attunement, the Museo di Antichità in Turin generously shared previously unpublished documentation of the scientific examinations carried out on the vessel to investigate its contents and identify the fragrant substances.

These archival materials, together with the ancient object itself, became an important point of departure for Revier’s research, informing her series of hand-blown glass birds, each containing a sealed fragrance that can only be experienced by breaking its tail.

Part of this research is brought together in the publication accompanying Attunement, connecting archaeological evidence and curatorial framework. by @marina____marques

Very happy to finally share Imaging Atmospheres, Issue 12 of IMG Journal, which I had the pleasure of curating together with Francesco Bergamo.

The issue emerged from a shared inquiry into what happens when the image operates at the threshold of perception.
We approached imaging as a set of situated practices — sensory, spatial, technical, artistic, and speculative — through which something can become perceptible without necessarily becoming fully visible.

Across very different perspectives, the contributions move through aesthetics and contemporary art, philosophy and phenomenology, ecology and climate, neuroscience, architecture, design, sound, olfaction, digital environments and speculative practices. What connects them is an understanding of atmosphere as an operative condition.

A very special thank you to our keynote contributors Giuliana Bruno and Tonino Griffero, and to all the authors and artists who generously accepted our invitation and submitted bringing their research, practices and perspectives into this issue:

Elena Mancioppi, Clara Muller, Alessia Ugolin, Gianmarco Bezzi, Elena Giulia Abbiatici, Camilla Sette, Nuvola Ravera, Enrico Boccioletti, Elena D’Arsiè, Francesca Flora, Achille Filipponi, Elisabetta Canepa, Alessio Bortot, Letizia Artioli, Nicola Zolin, Christian Scenini, Federico Rita, Moreno Elia Hebling, Michael Renner, Juan Carlos Dall’Asta, John Latto, Sandro Rolla, Marco Addona, Vincenza Garofalo, Maria Milano and Silvana Khutz.

Thank you for the generosity, care and depth you brought to this project. It has been incredibly rewarding to see such different voices and disciplines come together around questions that are very close to our own research - and I hope the conversations that began within these pages will continue well beyond them.

Attunement marks Amy Revier’s first work in glass, developed during her residency at CASA YALI with the support of the @nancygravesfoundation Artist Grant 2025–26.

Hand-blown in Murano, the glass birds take their form from ancient Roman bird-shaped unguentaria: vessels made to contain scented oils and associated with funerary rituals.

Each bird holds a sealed fragrance. Like their ancient counterparts, the scent remains inaccessible unless the vessel is broken at the tail — turning the object into both a container and the possibility of an irreversible gesture.

One London Design Festival stop for glass, books — and a final chance to see Ann Iren Buan’s @annibuan acclaimed London debut.

From 17–20 September, Siegfried Contemporary @siegfriedcontemporary presents «SPOTLIGHT: GLAS, PLEXI», bringing Paola Petrobelli’s @studio_paolapetrobelli newest Venetian glass works to London alongside the newly published «GLAS, PLEXI» book.

Petrobelli has previously exhibited at Triennale Milano @triennalemilano and her work has been highlighted by «The New York Times» and selected by Wallpaper* @wallpapermag as a Design Miami/Basel @designmiami must-see. For this new project, she works with master Venetian glassmakers to create modular objects in glass and Plexiglas that can be taken apart and recomposed.

Published by CASA YALI @casa_yali in a limited edition of 500, the accompanying book brings together Petrobelli’s objects, working processes and research, with contributions by curator Marina Marques and design curator and writer Libby Sellers @misslibbysellers . The publication was designed by @chiaraaalexandra assisted by Leo De Luca and Alice Righini. During London Design Festival, copies will be available directly from Siegfried Contemporary, and can also be purchased online or in person from CASA YALI.

For London Design Festival @l_d_f_official, the works extend from Siegfried Contemporary’s Art and Design Salon into the adjoining Notting Hill townhouse, allowing visitors to experience them in a domestic setting. The same visit offers a final opportunity to see «Carmine Ashes», Ann Iren Buan’s @annibuan first solo exhibition in the UK, on view until 25 September.
