At the origin of Attunement is the Colombina di Rovasenda, an ancient Roman bird-shaped glass vessel dating to the first century AD, preserved at the Museo di Antichità in Turin.

Bird-shaped unguentaria were used to contain scented substances and are often associated with funerary rituals. Their contents could be released by breaking the narrow glass tail, an irreversible gesture that transformed the vessel and its contents.

What makes the Colombina di Rovasenda particularly remarkable is the survival of traces of its original contents, offering a rare opportunity to investigate an ancient fragrance preserved for nearly two millennia.

For Attunement, the Museo di Antichità in Turin generously shared previously unpublished documentation of the scientific examinations carried out on the vessel to investigate its contents and identify the fragrant substances.

These archival materials, together with the ancient object itself, became an important point of departure for Revier’s research, informing her series of hand-blown glass birds, each containing a sealed fragrance that can only be experienced by breaking its tail.

Part of this research is brought together in the publication accompanying Attunement, connecting archaeological evidence and curatorial framework.
