life update: next month I’ll be starting a PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge in the UK (!) while this is truly a dream come true for me, I’m savoring the rest of the summer here as much as I can. by @marisarando

it’s cliche to say when you turn 30, but the past few years leading up to this one have really been about getting closer to myself. I spent too many years molding myself for others - directing my steps through their affections and disapprovals. avoiding pain to remain palatable. It’s been a slow (sometimes freeing, sometimes agonizing) unraveling to get closer to the things that are truest to me. to let go of relationships that stopped feeling right. to rediscover what I love about myself. to set healthy boundaries to protect my peace. to design a life that feels like home. a life of safety and freedom - but not the kind we’re sold that’s about maximizing personal prosperity, but real freedom that is reflected in the design of our world and therefore includes everyone. (because, honestly, who of us can ethically dance in the rain while others drown in its flood?).

real freedom feels far sometimes but it gets closer to me every day I spend with those who share this vision and do the work to put it in motion. people who’ve done some untangling themselves and have abandoned the loneliness of struggling in silence, the lack of imagination in conformity amongst brokenness, the constant fear buried under prioritizing hierarchy/social status. I’m proud to have a community of people like this, who truly just want to be here for each other. with them, these more recent years have been so sweet and expansive - a zeitgeist for creativity and love, but also healing every ounce of anger, shame, etc inside me (stored up from earlier days, inherited from an unjust society). to them and this journey I am forever grateful.

and it’s all ongoing of course, but this feels like a nice moment to reflect on the progress to date and think about what I’m living for. moved by the grace and beauty in everything, yet burning for a better world. by @marisarando
