What a fun and sunny weekend in Ketchikan! ☀️

Memories in Marawi 🕌
I got to spend Ramadan in Lanao del Sur with friends from Salimpokaw Cultural Ensemble!
It was so nice to have a quiet few days learning Kolintang music and seeing other municpalities along the lake. Spending time with Kuya Lyns and Tida Lods was so fun! Super appreciative of all the new friends made and learning more about Meranao culture taken in Binidayan, Lanao del Sur by @matthurry

Puerto Galera with the parentals. Dad and i spent a few days scuba diving 🤿 some incredible dive spots there!! Saw the biggest turtle ive EVER seen and the reefs were impressive.

We also got to do an inland tour which included Mangyan Village, White Beach, and Tamaraw Falls.

Harris family takes Manila 🇵🇭Their first time in the Philippines! First trip all together in probably 10 years. We saw a good chunk of NCR! Manila, Intramuros, Likhang Filipino, SM MOA, Makati, Greenbelt, Ayala Museum, National Museum, BGC. Packed weekend! Highlight was the Salcedo Market for sure- they got to try a bunch of local fruits and bbq. taken in Manila, Philippines by @matthurry

Very special day getting hand tapped tattoos with my long time friends @mac.drea @sammilicious from the incredible @atewamz , visiting all the way from Baguio!

Im so happy that Ate Wamz had charcoal from Siargao for the ink, and we were able to blend in a bit of soil i brought home from the Espina farm in Surigao City. Surigaonon earth and fire all in one package!

-Tuning a kulintang set-

Who knew I’d find my dream kulintang on facebook marketplace…in Oahu!

Sometimes kulintang sets are meant for decoration. Or they are mishandled and dropped. There are a lot of reasons why someone may have an untuned kulintang!

What I do is when I’m introduced to a kulintang set, I’ll take a video tapping each of the gongs. When I get home, I identify what note each gong has. I’ve been doing this for a number of years, and have a little collection of Kulintang tuning.

Tools I use to tune kulintang are a hammer, a stick (some masters can go hammer to gong, I’d be too scared to try), a tuner, and a piano app. I also transpose keys on paper so I can find the closest notes that require the least amount of tuning. It’s like a little math equation each time.

I’ve seen a few folks tune gongs here in the states and in the Philippines, and I’m always amazed when people can do it by ear! Personally, I don’t have a good ear for tuning. I can barely tune an ukulele without a tuner haha!

I’m so proud and thankful to have this Meranao kolintang set, and I’m beyond excited that it is now playable!

Adhika by @parangaldance! First full production show outdoors 🌞
Proud of the musicians for having the skills and stamina to play music on that hot stage for 2 hours! Yall sounded amazing and im very proud of this group!
Performing with our Tausug culture bearer @airiaa.obeso auntie Ling Ling all the way from the Philippines was such an incredible moment!
And any performance with Kalinga CB Manang Jenny is always a good time.
