Lori Mayes made her Canadian theatrical debut starring as the title character in The Musical Stage Company's workshop of the new musical, Clara at the Door with a Revolver, as part of the Canadian Festival of New Musicals at the Young Centre for Performing Arts on the first weekend in June. Helmed by @jane_moriarty_director with Music Supervision by Sean Mayes, Clara at the Door with a Revolver features Music & Lyrics by Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Book & Additional Lyrics by Susan Wokoma, and is based on the book by Carolyn Whitzman. This is the true story of Clara Ford, a biracial suit-wearing woman in 1890’s Toronto accused of killing an affluent 18 year old man. Initially coerced into confessing, Clara ends up being the first woman in Canada to defend herself in court in front of a jury of 12 white men and be acquitted of this murder trial… and then moves onto having an illustrious career in vaudeville. The cast features Lori Mayes as Clara Ford, James Daly as Frank and others, Samantha Mbolekwa as Flora/Ensemble, James Pattison as Gus/Ensemble, Mitch Wood as Slemin and others, with Composer Ayanna Witter-Johnson on Bass, Associate Music Director Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh on Accordion and Percussionist Steven Jackson. The production team also includes Assistant Director @esiemensah, Associate Music Director @mona_s_b_ and Stage Manager Sam Hale. Lori Mayes is an Actorpreneur currently residing in Caledon, ON. During her time in NYC, favorite credits include Orange is the New Black, FBI: Most Wanted, her sold-out solo show Audra on a Budget, and appearances as a featured vocalist in André De Shields’ concert series at 54 Below and with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.Lori is the Founder of Natural Talent, an experiential staffing agency that exclusively employs actors across North America. Over the past decade, the company has staffed more than 12,000 events, providing “survival jobs” for over 1,000 actors across the U.S. and Canada (www.naturaltalent.co). Passionate about cultivating the next generation of artist-entrepreneurs, Lori also leads entrepreneurship workshops for the Entertainment Community Fund and universities nationwide. I was astonished to be on one of the few flights to depart the day of the massive snow storm on Jan 25, for Taipei. At the generous invitation of The Glory Foundation for Creative Industries, I was invited to speak at the Taiwan Musical Reading Festival and Taiwan Creative Content Agency International Forum. The festival asked the question, “Asian musical theatre has stepped onto the global stage. But after rigorous testing, discussion, and revision, does the work you hold in your hands also have the potential to meet its audience and travel even further?” I had the honour to deliver a keynote on “Hatching in to New Markets: Early Development Frameworks and International Pathways for Musical Theatre Production” and participate in a Q & A and workshop focused on “the current situation and practical judgement of a producer in the industry.” It was incredible to engage with a community that had the most thoughtful and intellectually curious questions about the development and producing of new musicals. I was also able to observe pitches of 14 new Taiwanese musicals. I was inspired by the compelling storytelling and themes the community was amplifying. There are many parallels between Canada and Taiwan in the creative industries as we create work and tell our stories next to super powers. The dreams are big and are matched by the freedom to tell the stories that deeply resonate with writers and composers. I look forward to strengthening our ties to work together to create world class musical theatre. I am grateful to the Glory Foundation team, Chairman Rick Lei, CEO Mia Sun, Project Manager Cheno Chen and all of the staff and translators for their next level hospitality and care. Thanks to the Taiwan Creative Content Agency for all of their support. I did feel more like family than a guest. I was enriched and inspired by all the writers, composers, producers and directors I met and had the opportunity to engage with. It was also thrilling to be present alongside Tony Award winner Will Aronson and to learn more about his exceptional work and the creation of the brilliant Maybe Happy Ending.
