Gray • Coming soon

This is perhaps one of the strangest and most difficult fonts I’ve worked on over the years. It often took several years of experimentation and time away to land on some of the decisions that make it what it is today.

Is it a sans, a serif or a blackletter? How do you balance the sensibilities of these without Frankensteining them together? by @mttymtt

I’ve realized that I’ve been working on Gray for 10 years now. 10 years!

Instead of letting it continue to collect dust on my computer, I am preparing an early release of it as an in-progress font.

Final → Sketch

I recently played with Cavalry for the first time, and boy is it cool. I haven’t even scratched the surface, but I am very keen to explore more of its capabilities. by @mttymtt

Say hello to Matthew Smith (@mttymtt), Design Director.

Prior to SYLVAIN, Matthew was at High Tide, working across a wide range of clients—from early stage startups to legacy brands. Matthew has a serious eye for type and founded the independent type practice Morning Type.

The addition of Matthew represents the continued growth of our creative practice, and we’re ready to do great work together. From CDO Michael Kaye (@michaeliankaye): “Having always had a passion for craft, ideas, and design excellence, we’re excited to have Matthew join to take our creative practice to the next level. His care and attention will push our work even further.”

Throwback to the release party for @elmichelsaffair 24 hr sports album. This was my first time experimenting with shooting video in a *very* long time.

Was a pleasure working on this album artwork with @liliajimenezz and @dannymillernyc at @hightideny.

Gotta shout out Midwest Awards who actually produced the trophy on the album cover, and then @sergiybarchuk for shooting the photo. by @mttymtt

Here’s a look at just about every logotype I have worked on. Most used, some unused, and a few director’s cuts.

Many of these were drawn in collaboration with other designers. You can find their names, and view these marks all on my site:

Posting right before I go to bed because I don’t have a social strategy 😛 well really my strategy is simply “make the things I want to see in this world.” And for me—for whatever reason—manifests itself as a glorified spreadsheet of type foundries filled with thousands of data points.

Any way, have you been to the new type foundry directory yet? 👀 by @mttymtt

Last in the series of this Gill Kayo interpretation. In the last post I talked a bit about texture, and while it’s extremely subtle, another way I am playing with embracing unevenness is by making the right stem of the “n” thinner than the left. Sounds blasphemous, I know! by @mttymtt

Another look at this Gill Kayo interpretation. Something I have found a particular interest in with this face is the texture. So often with heavy fonts, designers flatten any sense of texture in favor of an even blackness.

Kayo seemed to prioritize personality and embraced an uneven quality to let the texture shine rather than shying away from it.

I’ve been interested in finding ways to preserve that sparkly quality that you see in the “a” for example. The capital “G” is probably most indicative of this effort. by @mttymtt
