Say hello to Matthew Smith (@mttymtt), Design Director.

Prior to SYLVAIN, Matthew was at High Tide, working across a wide range of clients—from early stage startups to legacy brands. Matthew has a serious eye for type and founded the independent type practice Morning Type.

The addition of Matthew represents the continued growth of our creative practice, and we’re ready to do great work together. From CDO Michael Kaye (@michaeliankaye): “Having always had a passion for craft, ideas, and design excellence, we’re excited to have Matthew join to take our creative practice to the next level. His care and attention will push our work even further.”

Another look at this Gill Kayo interpretation. Something I have found a particular interest in with this face is the texture. So often with heavy fonts, designers flatten any sense of texture in favor of an even blackness.

Kayo seemed to prioritize personality and embraced an uneven quality to let the texture shine rather than shying away from it.

I’ve been interested in finding ways to preserve that sparkly quality that you see in the “a” for example. The capital “G” is probably most indicative of this effort.
