Did you know the Museum Trail is built along a historic railroad track? 🛤️

The Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad, the rail line that eventually became part of the Museum Trail, ran through Jackson from the 1930s until it was decommissioned in 1972. As more historic railroads were left abandoned throughout the ‘80s, the movement to preserve railways for public use grew.

The Museum Trail is a #RailsToTrails project in Jackson, Mississippi – designed to reuse the old passage to link cultural attractions, historic sites, and communities.♻️

The trail aims to enhance accessibility and connectivity throughout the city. The Museum Trail Downtown Expansion will continue down the old railroad path along Commerce Street and Court Street!

We’re celebrating a huge announcement for Downtown Jackson… the @museumtrail Capitol Green Connector is officially underway! 🙌

The greenway will connect from LeFleur’s Bluff all the way to Jackson State, providing a protected pedestrian corridor through the heart of downtown. This project has the ability to bring new investment to the capital city, but more importantly reconnect our neighborhoods and offer opportunities to live healthier lifestyles.

A huge thank you to Jackson Heart Foundation for its leadership in continuing to move the Museum Trail forward.

This year, Young at Heart celebrated the Capitol Green Connector, the newest phase of the trail extending into Downtown Jackson and creating new connections between the Two Mississippi Museums, the historic GM&O Depot, Hal & Mal’s, and surrounding destinations.

Jackson Heart Foundation has begun fundraising for the next phase, the Arts District Connector, which will extend the Museum Trail farther through downtown and strengthen connections including the Mississippi Museum of Art and The Art Garden, along with nearby businesses, cultural destinations, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

Young at Heart: Gather on the Green was a fitting place to celebrate how far the trail has come through philanthropic efforts and community partnerships. The Belhaven Hills Classic is back 🏁

Hosted by the @jxntrailclub, @greaterbelhaven, and @belhavenmtnbike, the race runs through the Belhaven neighborhood, the Museum Trail, the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trails, and LeFleur’s Bluff.

Choose from a 16K road and trail race, an 8K run, a one mile Bier Run, or a one mile Kids Fun Run.

I’m so excited to share that I’ve received a $500 Mini-Grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission! ✨

Untamed Adaptation is a series of four 7 × 32 ft murals along the Jackson Museum Trail, each inspired by wildflowers native to Mississippi. These pieces are incredibly special to me. I love the idea that someone can be out enjoying the trail, surrounded by nature, and suddenly stumble across these huge walls of flowers tucked into the landscape 🌼🌾

This grant will help me give all four murals some much-needed love with touch-ups and a fresh protective coating, helping preserve them so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

I’m so grateful to @MSArtsCommission for helping me care for a piece of public art that means so much to me, and for supporting artists and art in our community 💜💜💜 @museumtrail

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Community Planting Day on the Capitol Green Connector!

Volunteers helped plant and water new landscaping that will bring shade, improve stormwater management, support native habitat, and create a more comfortable pedestrian experience as the Museum Trail extends into Downtown Jackson.

This work was made possible through support from Entergy Mississippi’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, the Capitol Complex Improvement District, the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund, and the Community Foundation for Mississippi through Jackson Heart Foundation’s ongoing efforts to move the Museum Trail project forward.

Special thank you to the @so.ho.landscaping crew for preparing the soil and providing the plants and mulch that helped bring the day together.

The Capitol Green Connector is the next step toward creating a healthier, greener, and more connected Jackson.
