These pieces form part of an ongoing series of digitally embroidered works based on illustrations of Japanese fireworks dating from the 1800’s. Taken from catalogues advertising the wares of the Hirayama and Yokoi fireworks manufacturers, these illustrations were recently digitised and made available online by the Yokohama City Library.
The works flirt with pictorial representation, the language of technical drawings and prototypes and a poetic underarstanding of fireworks as diagrams in the sky.
The stitch and technique used were chosen to draw attention to the texture of the work, the material and its three-dimensional nature. The stitch resembles wicker baskets, stars, but also pixels. It feels particularly fitting for fireworks, where we see an image emerging from the combination of small “dots”, but also appropriate for highlighting the way that digital embroidery, despite being mechanical, requires a very hands-on approach making it more akin to hand embroidery or painting rather than other digital printing and manufacturing processes.
