I’m very happy to present to you ‘Feo Maneno’, my graduation project for the Master Contextual Design at
@designacademyeindhoven !!
The ‘Vango Vango’ is a traditional Malagasy silver ‘jonc’, a potent symbol of remembrance linked to Madagascar’s history of slavery. French-Malagasy designer Thibaud Kanty Boto has worn one since childhood, growing up with its profound significance. Today, however, this cultural artefact risks being reduced to a tourist souvenir, stripped of its deeper meaning.
‘Feo Maneno’ is a sound installation that stages a call-and-response between traditional Malagasy sounds and motor-driven hammers, echoing the hammering of silver ingots used to craft the ‘Vango Vango’. Through programmed, repetitive strikes, ancestral craft gestures are translated into rhythm.
These mechanical hammers do not simply replicate traditional music; they enter into dialogue with it. Their precise, controlled strikes generate ambiguous rhythmic textures that prompt reflection on cultural transmission, historical violence, and embodied memory through the reinterpretation of craft. The work explores how sound can become a medium of resistance and preservation.
We often associate a graduation project with one person, but this one wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible guidance of my tutors
@afainadejong @margaweimans @gabriel.a.maher_studio @jorgemanesrubio and many more.
Also without the unwavering support of
@liloulemonnier @erenaybilgin @baidageorge @phoebeeyyy @lillyalexxandra @d_crichlow @enissay.b @vn_valentin @olfa_rachdi @swen0207 who have been there every step of the way. Thank you from the heart.
