I used to try to grow all of the things, all of the time (the blessing + curse of the year-round growing season here). After a few years, I got tired of always feeling behind and worrying about what was dying and what needed pruning or replacing. I finally asked the (obvious) question, “Who am I doing all of this for?” Turns out nobody else cared, but me, but I’d gotten caught up in a self-imposed should.

So I stopped trying to grow all the things anxiously and instead started growing a few things joyfully. Turns out a smaller garden can produce a sweeter harvest.

Ik, ik, feels like a metaphor. Didn’t even mean to do that, but you can’t stop the garden from teaching.
