If you’ve ever felt like this, reaching for somewhere, anywhere to begin with complex trauma, it doesn’t mean you’re not good at EMDR. It means no one taught you how to map what you need to, yet.
Our clients need us to see both the “forest” and the “trees.” Individual traumatic experiences land differently, and affect each client differently, depending on the context, the history, and the level of vulnerability that preceded them.
The forest is made of so much. Met and unmet attachment needs. Earlier experiences of harm that planted seeds of doubt about a client’s safety, worth, power, or belonging. Internal and external experiences of resilience and resources. The ways a client has adapted to cope when the pain was too great to tolerate and secure attachment was out of reach.
This is the forest we can map, and must map, to strategically choose and effectively target the “trees” that will make the most difference.
📌 Save this for when you’re trying to figure out where to start with a client who has layers of trauma, unmet attachment needs, and a kaleidoscope of symptoms.
💌 Send it to your closest EMDR colleagues who are navigating the same challenges.
