I take a pragmatic approach to sustainable viticulture. Economic sustainability means getting young vines to the wire as quickly as possible to get a crop.
Highly competitive perennial grasses removed with a selective herbicide, allowing annual legumes such as subterranean clover to spread and cover the areas once dominated by the grass, forming a thick natural mulch for the coming summer. No ploughing. No damage to soil structure or mychorrizal fungi. No soil erosion. Reduced diesel use. Reduced water use.

I have had great results establishing various clover under vine such a better way to manage things, so much more productive sheep grazing in the off season as well
