You don’t built a cult brand by posting every day. People become obsessed when they can tell what the person behind it actually thinks. Most business owners have never written that down. Not because they’re bad at business — because nobody’s ever asked them.

So here are some questions to uncover the good shit for your brand:

❓ What do you stand for, even when it costs you money?
❓ If someone handed you a microphone, what could you rant about for half an hour without stopping? That spicy point of view will help your people find you and think FINALLY, SOMEONE GETS IT.
❓ What advice do people in your industry give that makes you roll your eyes? What you disagree with tells people what you’re for and why you’re better. Fast.
❓ How do you want people to feel after working with you? Not what they get. How they feel – you can build that feeling into every touchpoint of your business.
❓ If you woke up tomorrow with a massive trust fund and never had to work again, would you still do this work? Why or why not? Both answers are useful. It’s the why that does the work.

Answer those honestly and you’ll have a pile of raw material. Opinions, irritations, the thing you’d still do for free.

Which is the fun part. It’s also not a brand yet.

Those five tell you what you think. They don’t tell you what to DO with it — and that’s where everyone stalls. You end up with a lovely list of beliefs and still no idea what to post on a Tuesday.

So I made a worksheet with five different questions. Harder ones. The ones I actually take paying clients through, that turn all of the above into values you can run the business off — what to say yes to, what to charge, what to stop offering, what your people should be able to feel before they’ve even spoken to you.

The first answer to those questions is almost always the polite version, so I’ve included the follow-up prompts I use to get past it.
