The Panther and the Crocodile 🐊 a new chapter of the extraordinary series I had the chance to direct for Cartier.

For this fable, we entered the fascinating world of lacquer with @atelier_midavaine 🙌🏻 another exceptional métier d’art, another material, and an entirely new language to explore through stop-motion.

For each film, I wanted the animation to be born from the craft itself. Here, I explored the very nature of lacquer: its liquid state, its depth, and the successive layers that are built up by the artisan over time.

These gestures and properties became part of our animation language. Liquid lacquer could flow and transform, while other sequences were revealed through scratching and removing layers, frame by frame, using the very construction of lacquer to create movement.

This is what makes this project so unique to me: an artisan d’art creates an extraordinary piece by hand, Cartier High Jewellery becomes part of that world, and stop-motion brings the material itself to life.

A rare meeting of métiers d’art, precious materials, exceptional jewellery and animation 💥 where every detail is about time, gesture and savoir-faire.
