The sad reality of being on social media is that everyone is trying to level up their follower count. The thing is there are a large number of us that actually want to engage with those who wander across our pages and decide they want to stick around. I’m not just an author trying to achieve my dream. I love books, reading has been a fundamentally important piece of my life since before I could even tie my own shoes. In a conversation tonight it was brought up how the staircase of social media closely resembles high school in that when you’re content is seen by many and they willfully engage with it you are popular yet if you’re at the bottom fighting just to be out of the low view range you’re the opposite. I didn’t plan to write a paragraph on all of this but it bothered me more than I care to admit. Will this change where I’m at on that staircase? I’m pretty positive it won’t but I’m human. I can’t just sit back and be someone’s doormat all so they can add that one extra number to their follower count. #readersofinsta #followercleanse #authorsofinstagram #reader #socialmediaishard

I want just as many followers as friends. 🙌

I’ve never really understood this whole obsession with having more followers than people you follow. If you genuinely love the community and the hobby you’re part of, wouldn’t you want to see what others are doing and show them some love and support? And honestly, isn’t gaining followers through deception a little… tacky? 😂 You’re not necessarily popular; you’re just tricking people into following you to inflate your numbers and feed your ego. Surely genuine connections and engagement mean more than a follower count?

This is why I won't do F4F. First, I want quality, not quantity. Second, I only want to foow others who interest me and bring value to my feed. If an account is just posting pictures of their food, or their content just isn't interesting to me, it feels pointless to have them in my feed when there are so many other accounts I could be enjoying. I HATE engagement bait strategies for social media marketing. I value genuine connection and conversation over "TELL ME WHAT TROPE YOU LOVE!!!!". Like, I don't care? I mean, I do, but, like, let's dive deeper. WHY do you love those tropes??? Or whatever. So yeah, whenever I see people post their "get a million followers with these 5 posts!" and they're all engagement bait and F4F? No thanks. I'd rather have 10 consistent, interesting followers instead of 500 who are all posting the same thing.

I’m very strict about that! These idiots don’t know that no matter what I’ll find them by accident sooner or later and when I do, I unfollow and block them! I can’t keep track so I won’t give them another chance to do it!

This 🙌 I follow back and support every bookish account that follows me & if they unfollow after I follow back, instantly blocked 🚫 I run a check every week.

How do you work out who is unfollowing? Because I’ve been used a lot lately 😢

I will genuinely never understand these people. Isn't community exactly what we want?
