Queer Art Is Being Stolen.

As queer artists, we have to fight 10x as hard to be seen and to have our artwork viewed as legitimate. But, once we do make it and our work is deemed appropriate enough for a wider society, it is commonly repurposed/stolen by straight communities or individuals, in order to help them achieve quick success.

Straight artists are making money off of the years of suffering and injustice within the queer community. We create art from despair - we are able to tap into a type of creativity the average person could only dream of.

Enter @jamesmcqueenart . Taking from artists and repurposing famously queer iconography in a pretty insulting way. Haring’s dogs were a symbol of resistance, but McQueen would rather see them chained up and ‘owned’ by a repurposed @banksy artwork.

To these artists making £10,000’s off of these artworks, I say get your own struggle. Come up with your own identity rather than jumping on the back of someone, whose life you could never fully understand.

You are ignoring the fact that gay artists like Haring also steal from black artists who are even more marginalised

Sorry I think you’ve used my photo in conjunction with the wrong art/artist. I’m Gary James McQueen, easily confused with James McQueen. I am straight so not sure if it still applies but do try to create original artwork based on deep underlying story telling ✌️

Unfortunately this is also the price of “equality”….. no one really wants equality. Everyone wants to have acceptance and safety with a little dash of privilege. So it’s doesn’t matter where something started. Once society “accepts” something it’s no longer special and it’s just going to be appropriated and watered down and will Then filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. It’s not just queer artists, its black and brown people. It’s every culture. Yesterdays taboo and curiosity of the unusual is tomorrows regurgitated old news. And I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just curious as to what you think the “solution” is ….. or do you just wanna rant about it like this is a new phenomenon?
