Thrilled to share that #CHARLOTTESVILLE has won The Scotsman Fringe First Award for outstanding new writing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe! The awards were presented at a ceremony hosted by chief theatre critic Joyce McMillan this morning and what made it even more surreal - I received the award from the wonderful Miriam Margolyes, beloved to so many as Professor Sprout from Harry Potter! I gave my very first acceptance speech thanking all the people who have made this possible. I share this recognition with my brilliant team of collaborators especially director @yuryurnov and producer Richard Jordan (proud to bring him his 19th Fringe First win!)

I’m deeply humbled to stand among a lineage of remarkable recipients including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose Fleabag began here before becoming a global phenomenon, and Richard Gadd, whose Baby Reindeer went on to become a hit Netflix series. And, long before them, icons like Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Billy Connolly, and John Byrne. Big congratulations to all of the recipients this year including Eat the Rich, Rift, and Ohio!!

Huge thanks to the festival, the awards’ jury, and everyone who has been part of this journey. It’s still sinking in. When I wake up tomorrow and see it first thing in the morning, maybe I’ll believe this has truly happened. :’) taken in Edinburgh Festival Fringe by @priyankashettyactor

Omg just seeing this 🥲 “Shetty is no stranger to the solo format, and with #CHARLOTTESVILLE, she further cements her place as one of the most vital and thought-provoking theatremakers of her generation. Born in India and now based in Philadelphia, Shetty’s work exists at the intersection of personal narrative, political urgency, and rigorous theatrical craft. Her plays interrogate systems of power, identity, and belonging often through the lens of her own lived experience as an immigrant woman of colour in America… As the Fringe draws to a close, Priyanka Shetty’s recognition with a Fringe First Award feels not only timely but entirely well-deserved. Her voice is one to watch not just in solo theatre, but in the broader landscape of contemporary performance.” taken in London, United Kingdom by @priyankashettyactor

I had the pleasure of visiting @templetheaters with @yuryurnov to speak with students about our journeys as artists and the making of #CHARLOTTESVILLE. We spoke about the challenges of being immigrant artists and what it means to create a piece that confronts white supremacy, authoritarianism, and the questions of belonging that feel increasingly urgent today.

A huge thank you to David Ingram for inviting us and creating space for these conversations. It was wonderful to share our experiences, talk theatre, and connect with the next generation of artists about the realities of making art in the world we live in.
