Join us for our next training Multimedia Field Reporting: The Art of the Resourceful Reporter. Sign up by tomorrow to attend each Thursday: October 15th, 22nd and 29th at 6:00 -7:30 PM, Willard 224

There’s more to vertical video than just looking good and talking at a smartphone. Reporting and filing from the field is a way to connect with your audience, make the news digestible, and keep information timely. It’s also an increasingly popular method of sharing the news, so reporters must think multimodally: content, scripting, audio, images, editing, engagement, impact and usefulness. This three-part series offers you the opportunity to learn the skills required for reporting on-the-go and the option to earn a badge highlighting your mastery. It’s also just in time for election coverage!

You must attend all three sessions: The Magic of Vertical Video, 10/15; The Art of High-quality Audio, 10/22; and The Craft of Capturing Visuals, 10/29. By signing up for the first session, you are automatically registered for the 2nd and 3rd.

1. The Magic of Vertical Video | 10.15.26
Amelia Knisely: Investigative reporter for West Virginia Watch
Kate Huangpu: Government reporter for Spotlight PA

At the Pennsylvania Grange Fair, Mount Nittany Health is bringing healthcare directly into the community. For many people in rural Pennsylvania, access to care can still mean traveling long distances to get the help they need.

As part of our look at the challenges facing rural healthcare, this fair met the people where they are and tried to fill in where gaps still remain.

The closure of SCI Rockview in Centre County presents the potential "to do something extraordinary — generational, quite frankly — for our community," one Pa. lawmaker said, but what that entails depends on who you ask.

For @pennlive, the News Lab explains what is and isn't known about Rockview's future.

Elizabeth Crisfield, executive director of ClearWater Conservancy, sat with the News Lab along Spring Creek to talk about her concerns and hopes for the future of the land occupied by the now-shuttered SCI Rockview. Crisfield and other community stakeholders have called on Gov. Shapiro's administration to be transparent and engage the public in deciding what happens next.

The News Lab is reporting on the potential future of the Rockview land. We'd love to hear from you. Write to us at: newslab@psu.edu

Ray Stolinas, Director of Planning & Community Development for Centre County, discusses the significance of the Rockview land and the role that the county plays in the future of it.

The Rockview corrections facility was officially closed on March 1, 2026. One question that remains unanswered is the future of the roughly 5,700 acres of land that Rockview occupied — one of the largest pieces of property owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The News Lab is reporting on the potential future of the Rockview land. We welcome your thoughts: email us at newslab@psu.edu.
