Sometimes, we think we’ve moved on, but a memory, a reaction, or an old pattern reminds us that some experiences stay with us in ways we don’t always notice.
How We Carry What Happens to Us: A Trauma-Informed Perspective is a World Mental Health Day webinar by CalmNest PK x Align Within, exploring how difficult experiences can shape the ways we think, feel, respond, and relate including patterns of rumination, blame, avoidance, suppression, and more.

Rather than judging these patterns, this session invites us to understand them with greater awareness and compassion and to explore what it means to carry our experiences differently.
Because moving forward can begin with understanding what we’ve been carrying.

A little peek into the very human side of being a therapist 🧠

Remembering a client’s entire psychosocial history but forgetting why I walked into the room… priorities, I guess.

Kinda chic, kinda chaotic😁 by @rewiremind

Over the past few months, while working at one of the leading government hospitals, I’ve come to realize a few important things about the reality of psychiatric disorders in our society. What I had once only read about in textbooks, I now witness firsthand in the clinical setting.

In my experience, more than half of the patients come to us when their condition has already reached an extreme, often becoming unmanageable. This delay is largely due to a deep-rooted belief in spiritual healers, as psychiatric disorders are commonly viewed through the lens of magic, the evil eye, or witchcraft. The first point of contact for many is a spiritual healer, who, unfortunately, often leaves patients more traumatized than before.

Another significant issue is the repeated hospital admissions of patients, largely due to them abruptly stopping their psychotropic medications. In many communities, especially those with low levels of awareness, psychiatric medications are highly stigmatized. People often believe these medications are either addictive or only meant for “sleeping more,” especially in rural areas or less-educated societies.

Something I hadn’t expected to encounter as frequently is the role of social media—particularly TikTok. Individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who lack education and awareness of ethical social media usage, often fall prey to manipulative content. This either triggers a full-blown disorder or significantly worsens their symptoms.

Working with this population sometimes leaves me with a sense of despair over the conditions they face. It’s not just the lack of resources and awareness, but the immense amount of time and effort required to help patients build insight and understand their illness. You have to meet them where they are, communicate in a way that’s culturally appropriate, and ensure that they feel understood and supported. Initially, this was quite challenging for me, but over time, I’ve learned to adapt and make this process easier and more effective. taken in Department of Psychiatry, JPMC Karachi by @rewiremind
