Here, I’m using the Magic Circle for a very specific purpose: to help achieve one of the main purposes of the exercise.

As teachers, it’s easy to grab a prop when something isn’t working. But do you know WHY you’re using it in the first place?

Inside The Classical Pilates Lab, we talk about understanding the purpose behind the tool, not just adding it because it seems to help.

And as I told the teachers inside The Lab today, when I give them a tool or prop, it’s to help them achieve the purpose of the exercise. I’m also thinking about how soon I can take it away.

I don’t want them to become dependent on it.

Sound interesting? Comment THE LAB to learn more.

You can know The Saw and still miss what it’s teaching you. Here are 3 things I want you to notice:

1 - The Saw is a breathing exercise.
2 - Turning the head helps the spine rotate.
3 - Now it’s your turn: Why is reaching the pinky finger toward the pinky toe so critical?

Don’t just think about what you’re supposed to do, think about why it’s there.

That’s the work we do inside The Classical Pilates Lab.

If you want to learn from me and develop this kind of thinking about The Method, comment LAB and I’ll send you the details.

Same exercise. Same springs. Two very different ways to move.
In the first, the legs push the carriage.
In the second, the movement starts in the Powerhouse and the legs follow.

From the outside, they can look almost identical. That’s what makes it so easy to miss when you’re teaching.

Watch again. What do you see? Drop it in the comments 👇

When you understand how the body is supposed to work, you begin to see movement differently. And when you see it differently, you teach differently.

With every passing year, I’m more grateful that I was raised by parents who taught me to value people over things.

I couldn’t do what I do without my people, my tribe, my crew... and that includes you.

Thank you for your support, whether it’s a like, a share, a text, a hang, being my day-to-day, and everything in between!

And thank you for all the birthday wishes. I felt every one. 🤍

Here’s to another year filled with wonderful adventures and memories!

With love and gratitude,
xo, Carrie by @russopilates

Progressing Inner Thigh Beats isn’t about making them bigger or faster. It’s about refinement!

Lowering the legs changes the demand on your Powerhouse. Keeping the beats small lets the focus be on the inner thighs.

And that moment when the heels almost touch? That’s where true control lies and where the 🔥begins.

Flying Eagle isn’t complete without this detail…It’s what stretches the neck and shoulders and completes the purpose of the exercise.

When teachers don’t know why something is there, that’s often how The Method starts to get diluted. And that’s when things start to go rogue.

♥️ Love giving this prep for Tendon Stretch as a way to introduce the exercise. It’s perfect for those who:

• hyperextend
• move from the legs only
• disconnect from their Powerhouse

If your clients aren’t scooping here…you’ll find out real fast! It all comes down to knowing one of the key purposes of this exercise.

Neck fatigue during ab work isn’t always a cueing problem. Sometimes the neck just needs to get stronger.

Place your hand on the side of the head and have your client gently meet the pressure. You’ll feel those muscles fire.

Try it on yourself first, then with a client💙

Where do your arms move from?

The Powerhouse!

But HOW? 🤔

That’s what it truly means to understand Pilates in your mind AND in your body.

Hold your horses 🐴😂 (get it?!) before coming at me with all your anatomy knowledge...

I’m not saying the shoulders don’t move. Of course they do!

But to truly understand Pilates means understanding how the Powerhouse is actually doing the work.

And once you understand that, you know what to look for in your clients.

Because how can you help them make their arms lighter if you don’t understand how to teach them to do it?

It’s not about memorizing the cues. It’s about understanding the WHY behind them.

We never sacrifice range for safety, Double Straight Leg Stretch is a perfect example.

If your client’s low back comes off the mat, they’ve gone too far. But instead of simply telling them to lessen their range…Ask yourself: what do you need to cue them to do?

Thinking like this is what helps you become a better teacher.

Comment THE LAB and I’ll DM you details on The Classical Pilates Lab, where certified teachers level up.

I don’t want you to memorize my cues. I want you to understand what you’re looking at well enough that you can figure out what to do when I’m not there to help you.

Because what I say in a session is for that person, in that moment, doing that exercise. It might be completely different for the next person.

And that’s the part I want to teach you. Not just, “Say this when you see this.”

But rather, how to look at a body, understand what you’re seeing, and make a decision based on what’s actually happening in front of you… not what someone told you to say.

Because eventually, you’re going to have a client in front of you who doesn’t fit the example you learned.

And I don’t want you thinking, “Oh shoot. I’ve never seen this before. I don’t know how to cue this!”

I want you thinking, “Okay. I see what’s happening. What does this person need?”

That’s when you’re really teaching.

And that’s when the confidence kicks in.
