PROCESS MANUAL #3:
Bib & Warm Bodies at East Wing, Kansas City, MO (2017)
Inkjet on Paper, Found Source Material
18 x 16.5

I was watching a true crime thing and it took place on the date of the show so I knew it was the right one for today!

Throughout my work, a theme I revisit is what I call a “tragic hunk”; iconoclasts that met unfortunate ends and have maintained sex symbol status, James being perhaps my favorite.

A thread through a lot of Royal Brat pieces was using sexually or gender ambiguous characters. For this piece, I used Petunia Pig, who is essentially Porky in a
wig – one might imagine it even is Porky in a wig. I like to!

I found the image of James’ car wreck in a 1987 issue of a magazine called Hot Rods. My free association was as follows:
James Dean > Jimmy Dean > Sausage > Pig

Car crashes also reminded me a lot of my love life at the time, so I wanted to incorporate that concept. I sourced the Petunia from a .jpeg of a patch from eBay and the other hog from a clip art resource I have since lost. In playing with the layout, I found that if I placed them a certain way, they made eye contact from across the
wreckage.

Most type was manually collaged from scans of types I kept over the years. My final touch was a lei, a reference to a pig roast and the themes of the piece. I sourced it from a 68 Graphic Resource about Hawaii.

In a strange coincidence, on the way out of town, we encountered a car engulfed in flames 35S. It was the first day of a west coast run with Royal Brat and is still one of my favorite shows ever. The show was wild and we stayed up late celebrating @shand0pe ’s birthday and partying late with @johnbirknerd I think this was one of the first times I remember truly hanging out with @black_kandy, who I went on to play in Hippyfuckers with.

This piece is dear to me for the fond memories and how it exemplifies a lot of work I made in this era. It’s the first I finished for the show, which is up for about another week at This & That.

There’s a closing reception this Sunday, September 27th from 6-9, and I’ll be giving a presentation at 5 about my process with a Q&A. Hope to see you there if you can make it! by @sandyyyuhrich

PROCESS MANUAL #F
Godstar (2023)
Inkjet Print Collage
16 x 19 ½

My show at This and That also includes a body of work I’ve never shared I’ve dubbed SCAN POEMS. These pieces were all made on lonely mornings in 2023 where I would smoke a joint and riff on poems I’ve written for 120 minutes or less. Some pieces include writing and others don’t, like this one, which just features layers of scraps and hand cut censors.

The show is up til the end of September with a closing reception on Sunday, September 27th from 6-9. I’ll also be giving a presentation at 5 about my process! Hope to see you there! by @sandyyyuhrich

PROCESS MANUAL #6:
Step Sister Album Art (2020)
Inkjet on Paper, Photographs, Thermal Print Collage on Paper, Found Source Material.
22 x 28

I can’t remember exactly how we landed on this art for Step Sister’s first tape - everything pre Covid feels a bit fuzzy. I do remember that me and @caitangelica had been longtime friends and admirers of each others works and that I was excited to be asked!

As with a lot of my work, I sourced from my vintage p*rn archive, creating their logo out of an ad for a Parisian gay bar. I also used two photographs - one of the tattoo on the back of my head, which serves as an homage to the cover of “Is a Cult” by the Funs. Philip’s work has deeply influenced mine and this felt like a fun way to nod to him. I also used a photo of Alex Wilson (of No Knock, Tiffani, Miserable Friend etc)’s new manicure. I pulled two graphics from Craphound and one from a book of signets, put it all together and degraded it with my printer and scanner.

This is one of 26 pieces I have on display at This and That this month! The show is up til the end of September. The opening was a lot of fun, and if you missed it, you can still come party at the closing on the 27th! I’ll be giving a presentation about my process and answering questions before the reception where @selfishteammate will perform and my buddy @kurt_ruslin will DJ! by @sandyyyuhrich

Tomorrow is the opening for my solo show PROCESS MANUAL! This show came together on about a 6 weeks notice and was made in the last couple weeks - though I suppose it represents hours, days, weeks, months of my time spent learning how to make art.

This show also got me to continue my education - all the frames used were up cycled, sanded, primed, and painted by me and my Mom @marie11360 , to which more credit is owed! I also learned hot to cut mat board which was… a journey.

I have always felt privileged to have been able to go to art school, though I stand firm in my belief that you can make a lot with stuff you buy at the thrift store and consumer grade equipment. This show attempts to invite people into some of the secrets and hacks I’ve gathered over the years because gatekeeping is for snobs!

I also know that a show that focuses on commissions and fliers has a lot of debt to the network of freaks I’ve me through punk and DIY. Many people who can see this are probably represented in here in one way or another, and I have a lot of gratitude for that, so thanks for supporting me as commissioner, collaborator, or cheerleader if you ever have!

And finally, thankyou to the amazing @nodraor.eilatan for inviting me to whip something up for @this.and.that.2731 ! She is the fucking best and she puts SO much work into making this space a staple for Minneapolis arts, we are lucky to have her!

Okay I could ramble forever but would rather yap in person, so if you’re around town tomorrow come stop by from 6-9, we’ve got legends @itchprincess and @dancoolsuniverse setting the sonic tone! All ages with a bar though fair warning my butt is in the show… for better or worse! taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @sandyyyuhrich

Today is 5 years alcohol free! Every year of distance from drinking affirms that this is and continues to be one of the most critical and rewarding choices I've made. Though I don't have much to say that I haven't said before, I do see meaning in celebrating this date every year because it truly did mark a turning point in my life, and I love the path it's lead me down. Though I feel more introverted and sometimes it can feel isolating, I also feel more locked in and aligned with myself, and that is a gift that keeps on giving.

It's also a choice that when I was actively using alcohol I never thought I would have the ability to make. I know many people feel stuck in their loops with our vices of choice, and I couldn't imagine anything different. I am grateful for whatever dawned on me, a moment of clarity, and for the support I've received by so many people in my life throughout this journey, so big shout out to specifically Marissa, Conor, Corrie, and to all the people who make abstaining feel natural and normal and easy.

Though I am not a perfect person by any measure, I am happy to be alive and happy to be myself and know myself better than ever. If you're struggling, don't hold it alone. The world is hard and we all use the tools we have available to navigate it, but always remember the hardware store is just down the street I'm here to talk if ya need me.

Cheers! by @sandyyyuhrich

PROCESS MANUAL is a mid-career retrospective of the design work of Sandy Uhrich. Throughout his two decade tenure in American DIY arts communities, Sandy has designed more than 250 shirts and show fliers for events and artists all over the US. This exhibition will feature a selection of these as well as an exploration of the manual processes used to create the work.

Over the past decade, utilizing photographs, found source material, clip art, thermal and inkjet printers, stickers, markers, exact-o knives, screen printing, sewing, and evasion of copyright laws, Sandy has maintained an archive of many of the different components of these collages.

This show will offer an intimate look into the methods used in his work, showing resources before and after they’ve been processed through the various channels Sandy uses to degrade, distort, and reinvent them in his signature style.

PROCESS MANUAL is a loveletter to luddite technology, DIY, and the freak network Sandy exists within.

The show will be on view at This and That in Minneapolis from September 5th-30th, 2026.

There will be an opening reception on September 12 from 6-9 PM featuring musical performances of some of Sandy’s commissioners.

On September 27th there will be a presentation by Sandy about the development of his creative process and a Q+A session from 5-6PM followed by a closing reception from 6-9PM.

Sandy was born in Bloomington, MN in 1990. He is a graduate of Perpich Center for Arts Education and holds a BFA in Photography from San Francisco Art Institute.

He has performed in bands Royal Brat, Rinse, and Hippyfuckers. He co-ran No Problem Records, a cassette tape label. He currently runs the clothing brand Truthlizard.

He makes all of his work in his home studio in North Minneapolis. His first remembered punk show was seeing Formaldehyde Junkies at Twin Cities Underground in 2004. by @sandyyyuhrich

6 of the sweetest months with Michael. Never met anybody who seems to understand me so effortlessly and makes me feel so cared about, even living over a thousand miles apart, you brighten up the corners with those high beams of yours. How quickly you’ve become one of my favorite partners in crime. Thanks for all the baked goods and meeting me at the gate when I arrive. Here’s to many more moons of sending each other a song every morning, milkshakes and cones and pies and good cold dishes of ice cream, spoons of all sizes, dusty Christian thrift stores, NPCs, amazing water features and whatever else! I love youuuuuuu 💙 by @sandyyyuhrich

Some nicknames Ladybird has received in her 7 years: Picnic (her rescue name), Birdie, Bird, Birdini Linguini, Moppa, Mops, Cinnamon Bun, Sugarloaf, Madam Muddypaws, Stinky Smelly, Miss Bird, the Duchess...

We call August 4th her birthday, so here's to another 7 years of Bird running really really really fast, swimming til she tuckers herself out, sleeping between my legs, laying around and sighing like she pays bills, ignoring me, sunbathing, making friends everywhere she goes (as long as you're not a dog or a child), being the best adventure partner and my favorite thing in the world. by @sandyyyuhrich
