POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
For those who might be new here, welcome! ✨

We wanted to properly introduce ourselves and share the story behind why we do this podcast.

What started as a textbook that never got written has since grown into a weekly podcast and newsletter. Each week, we share insights from science communication experts on how to communicate science well and all the creative ways you can do it.

Through our Listen To This If… episodes we tackle common challenges people in the field might face. Need to prepare for a job interview? Trying to stop procrastinating? We’ve got an episode for all kinds of everyday dilemmas.

We also share episode recaps and recommendations in our weekly newsletter, The ChitChat, which you can subscribe to via the link in our bio.

We’re so grateful we get to do this. To all the guests, students who have helped us bring this together over the years, and especially to you, our audience, thank you. You’re the reason we get to have so much fun doing what we love.

Please like, follow, and subscribe, and be sure to tune in wherever you get your podcasts! 🎧 by @scidocmartin

#52for52 Week 21 ✅

This week, I was invited to join an incredible new community.

On Wednesday, I was inducted as a Fellow of the @royalsocietyvic.

Founded in 1854 and modelled on the Royal Society of London, the RSV is Victoria’s oldest scientific body, established to promote the understanding and application of scientific knowledge for the benefit of the community.

Being elected a Fellow is a huge honour, and I was genuinely blown away to be included among this year’s extraordinarily accomplished group of leaders. Thank you so much to the whole team at the RSV for including me and warmest congratulations to all of the new Fellows 🙏

My citation reads: “Recognised for distinguished contributions to science communication, public engagement, and strengthening communication within the scientific community.”

I’m especially grateful that the RSV recognises the value of sharing science with different audiences — work I care deeply about. And I’m enormously grateful to all the brilliant people I’ve worked with over the past 20 years, and the thousands of students I’ve had the privilege of teaching.

{For background: Following how much I loved writing each week about my #50for50 in 2024 (50 new things in 50 weeks to celebrate my 50th birthday), and my #51for51 last year (focusing on things that brought me joy each week), this year I am paying attention to moments of connection, belonging or community each week.} by @scidocmartin

A few of you have questioned my sanity/ sincerity when claiming last Sunday’s marathon was extremely fun!

But I promise - when you’re running with fabulous friends and don’t have a time goal, running a marathon is a blast.

Thanks @the_pete_spink, @f_oxy_k and @chantelle_ontherun - you’re the best.

Do you remember the last time you drove somewhere without GPS?

These days many of us rely on Google Maps to find our way, but did you know that navigating on our own may be a good workout for our brains and could be linked to a lower risk of dying from Alzheimer’s disease?

Swipe to find out more!

Could your job protect your brain from Alzheimer’s? Researchers looked at nearly 9 million death records across hundreds of occupations, and two jobs stood out with the lowest rates of dying from Alzheimer’s: taxi drivers and ambulance drivers.

The likely reason? Both spend their days navigating on the fly, which gives a real workout to the part of the brain that builds our mental maps (which is one of the very first areas Alzheimer’s attacks.)

It’s not proof that using your brain rather than your GPS wards off dementia, but it’s a hint that keeping your brain busy finding its own way might be a good thing to do.

#52for52 Week 41 Part 2 ✅

The second very special part of Week 41 was running my 6th Melbourne Marathon.

Marathons are both hard and wonderful, and I’ve had my fair share of different experiences: marathons I’ve raced as hard as I possibly could (not fun, but very satisfying when you manage a PB, as I did last year), and marathons I’ve run more slowly and strategically while learning what my body needs in terms of nutrition and hydration (much more fun). I’ve even crossed the finish line in an ambulance after running the first 40.6 km of the Munich marathon (by far the least fun).

For a variety of reasons, this year’s goal was pretty simple: the slowest, but most fun marathon yet. Happily I had two excellent partners in crime – my delightful running buddies @the_pete_spink and @f_oxy_k. We took it easy, chatted, danced (to be fair this was mostly Pete, whose nickname is Hype Man) and revelled in the best of humanity, which tends to be on full display during a marathon. There really is no better place – surrounded by people doing a hard thing and finding courage, comfort and support in one another.

Kaajal showed us how to tough it out on a hard day, and our fabulous friend @chantelle_ontherun joined us in the later stages too. We saw lots of other friends out on the course (we were so happy to see you @wendy_glen), and I LOVED getting to see @rohanbeyondtherun charge past us at a ridiculously fast pace in his half marathon.

The four of us ran into the G and crossed the finish line all in a row, holding hands, united by a truly hard and wonderful shared experience. My heart is very full and my legs are very tired.
