To celebrate our 5th podcast birthday, we’re exploring how 100 guests have answered the question: “What’s your top tip for communicating effectively about science?” We’re counting down the top 10 tips, based on the themes our guests’ answers had in common.

Drumroll please! 🥁

After 10 days of counting down, we’ve made it to tip number 1: Know your audience. This was our most popular answer by a long way, with 24 of our guests independently telling us to talk with your audience, not at them.

Our guests described it in lots of different ways: think about what your audience needs, not just what you want to say. Put yourself in their shoes. Meet people where they’re at. As one guest put it, “Reach is a verb. You have to actually reach.”

Whether you’re writing a grant, making a TikTok or chatting at the pub, it all starts with the people you want to share your message with.

It's the end of Nature Book Week for another year, and we hope it's been a week of discovering new nature books and sharing your favourites with the people in your life. 📚

Congratulations to Zana Fraillon (@zanafraillon), whose delightful story 'Song of a Thousand Seas' has won the 2026 Environment Award for Children's Literature in the fiction category. Told from the perspective of Houdini, an octopus in an aquarium who longs for the big blue sea, it's a special book and we're delighted to celebrate it this week.

Thanks to Nature Book Week ambassador Dr Jen Martin and 2026 Environment Award judge Dr Linden Ashcroft for reading and sharing their thoughts on this book. 💚

📖 It's not too late to add a few more books to the bookshelves of the young readers in your life. The Wilderness Society has partnered with @harryhartogbookseller, who are donating 10% of shortlisted book sales to the Wilderness Society, so we can continue to protect wild places and wildlife into the future.

👉 Check out and purchase all the winning books at eacl.org.au (or our link in bio)

#NatureBookWeek may be over, but you can read nature books all year round.
