Thanks everyone for the amazing bday messages. I’m so lucky to “make new friends but keep the old” as the saying goes. ❤️ (speaking of which, thank you Cole and Cole’s mom!)

I was whisked away to a mystery destination this bday for a whirlwind reset and—— i found myself at Hornby island !!! ….. I had a healing massage outside, flowers, delicious local food, lots of journaling, and i put myself on whale watching duty ❤️🐋❤️

I highly recommend a visit to this gorgeous island but bring snorkel gear! It’s known as Canadas Hawaii 🌞#

I always love hearing from people who have their own stories connected to Painter’s Lodge and its history. ❤️

Today it was about June Painter ❤️ Founder of Painter’s Lodge and my very own great grandmother. She was one of the first strong women I ever looked up to and one of my earliest teachers about Vancouver Island and the English language . She was an entrepreneur, a matriarch and a woman with extraordinary values.

June and her husband Ned, whom I’m too young to remember, also co founded the Tyee Club. He’s in the second slide. 🎣

Smart, humble, witty and a wonderful listener, June had that rare combination of tenacity and surrender. She was incredibly capable, but also relaxed, classy and free spirited. She worked hard, dreamed big and built something that would positively touch generations of people. I think it was partly from her that I learned not to see life in black and white, and always to think bigger.

I was lucky enough to know her as a little girl, to have her read me stories under the stars on the deck of her tiny cabin, and to grow up surrounded by stories of a family legacy that is still very much alive today.

Between June and the other formidable women in and around my family, Catherine Painter, @anitapainter_andassociates and others, I really did hit the jackpot when it came to strong, positive women to learn from. ❤️

I may not have any talent for being a fishing guide pr choosing tackle lol, but the creative vision, a sense of humour, tenacity and love of storytelling are things she instilled in me and in so many others who crossed her path.

People leave. Stories remain. Values get passed down. And legacy has a funny way of living on. 🤍

Small plans can be big plans. Don’t believe me ? Think about the effect that a mosquito stuck in a car can have on your road trip :)

The small things bring me such joy these days … like waking up to an army of dog love and then bf hugs. Or the modest hobby garden we’ve got sprouting garnishes and veg.

With this shortened week and an obvious joy de vivre it makes it hard jamming in all the fun and necessary things one wants to do and enjoy, especially when the small moments bring such happiness. I saw someone on here talking about “flirting with life” and as cringe as that sounds, it resonates. When personal and professional life blooms, it’s hard to not find it “kinda chic” as they say 🌞✨❤️

Sometimes the best collaborative talks happen over diner breakfasts. ☕️🍳

Afterwards, I took the guys to my office and a few locations that have been living in my head for future scripts and media projects … ((because apparently that’s a perfectly normal thing to do. )) 😂

Thanks, @birkettamine, for indulging another morning of film talk, ideas, and location scouting. Thanks for also putting up with my self depreciating humour, sarcasm, and workaholism over the years…

And to my partner 😌 thank you for being so creative and for always making room encouraging this wonderfully strange craft. ❤️✨ I hope I have many more diner film chats with bottomless coffees and thespians this year.

Do you have ideas that won’t leave you alone? Ideas that keep lighting you up inside ? Fighting for you to fight for them ? If you do… chase that. Sometimes they’re chasing you for a reason. 🎬

🌲 Forest bathing 2.0: headstands and the ability to look at things upside down… and sideways. The moss may get a little sticky as you gently roll between your back, your sides, and a few moments upside down. Yes… inverted moments send the blood rushing to one’s head, but the entire 15-minute flow outdoors for me was pure bliss. ☁️☁️☁️

My perspective was that my hiking shoes aren’t entirely practical 🤪

Note: Please don’t attempt this if you’re pregnant or have any medical conditions without first checking with your healthcare provider. If you’re new to inversion, I recommend starting with sessions of 1 minute and gradually building up as tolerated.

For something a little different… Working on my writer and director look book again today I came across one of my favourite directing memories.

My last short film, shot in England, won Best Scenography, featured an original score by the legendary @sachaputtnam, and starred @jon_campling, known to many as one of the Harry Potter Death Eaters.

Like many of my projects, it started with curiosity. An afternoon in Ealing digging through old newspapers with Matt Tyrrell turned into a screenplay inspired by forgotten stories, history, and period costume. Trying on ancient dresses started to bring the newspaper clippings to life. From there, I had the privilege of writing and directing an incredibly talented cast and crew, with the support of @bath_filmoffice while filming in the beautiful city of Bath.

Time has flown since then. Looking back reminds me how much I love building worlds, leading creative teams, and bringing stories from the page to the screen.

I’m dusting off a few scripts and reminding myself of how it feels to “play.” Here’s to following curiosity, taking creative risks, and telling stories that stay with people.❤️

Worked all day but still want a road trip vibe ?

Step 1 set off after work and get a coffee or road trip beverage - do not start without this step !

💘 Bonus points! Pickup the free coffee newspaper and read the community news as well as the horoscope section.

Step 2 at the first random stop switch that to a fancy mocktail.

Step 3 repeat every 15-20 min on the road and don’t forget to get cheese !

To all the dog parents and actual human parents, iykyk these fun little afternoon/ evenings out are crucial for the (fur) babies development and mental health 🐶❤️🍼🧀✨🌲 our dogs are so calm knowing there’s cheese tax to be paid as well as forest air ❤️

Music on 🎶 Dad’s collection: Bob Seger’s Against the Wind. 🤍

I’m really bad at journaling, but looking at videos and photos have a way of doing it for me. They remind me of resilience, optimism, gratitude, and how the best memories are usually the ones you never planned.

The ferry to Cortes was pushing against the wind, but we were lucky enough to spot whales, (ironically the one time I didn’t have my camera), so I ran back to the car to grab it. On the other side, we settled into a beautiful dome at @gorgeharbourmarinaresort after a dinner. They literally had one dome left and no other accommodations available.

Then there was fishing, a few weeks back where we all know how that goes…. the tides and the wind have a way of taking you to places you never expected.

Grateful for all of it. 🤍
