Join us @cafeotodalston tonight to celebrate the launch of Listening Glossary edited by Hannah Kemp-Welch @soundarthannah. With Lucia Farinati, @alice._.eldridge @eleanormcdowall @suri.soundnotes Moushumi Bhowmik, Luigi Monteanno, @hectormacinnes @sasha_intheair @annie_g0h and Miriam Elgon.

The evening brings together 10 researchers and practitioners for a series of short contributions that form a live glossary. Each brings a term from the glossary to life through a reading and sonic offering. Moving between voices, sonic worlds and listening methods, the evening creates a constellation of possibilities for what listening might be.

Hannah Kemp-Welch will also be in conversation with Bodies of Sound co-editor Irene Revell @irene_revell, reflecting on the ideas and practices gathered in Listening Glossary.

The book brings together more than two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy, spanning nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power. Its entries invite us to listen through another’s ears and from specific perspectives, encountering forms of listening that range from the non-cochlear to the interspecies. Together, they reveal listening as a critical method for understanding and transforming the worlds we inhabit.

Really happy to share that I contributed to a new book called ‘Listening Glossary’, with a short text called No-Notes Listening. The book is edited by Artist Researcher Hannah Kemp-Welch (@soundarthannah) and published by Spiral House (@spiralhouseeditions) a new imprint of Silver Press (@silver.press). Out now!

Hannah asked me to contribute an anecdote about listening within social work, a short story about a moment of listening in the role. I chose a moment that stayed forever, when notes had to disappear.
.
“Listening Glossary explores the many meanings and practices of listening. In an era shaped by climate crisis, war and deepening social inequalities, listening is increasingly called upon to bear witness – to melting glaciers, disappearing species, militarised borders, extractive infrastructures and other forms of violence and loss. This glossary is a practical guide to listening as a social, political and imaginative practice. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power. Entries invite listening through another’s ears or from specific perspectives, encountering forms of listening that range from the non-cochlear to the interspecies. Together, these entries reveal listening as a critical method for understanding and transforming the worlds we inhabit.”

Listening Glossary is out today! Published by the wonderful @spiralhouseeditions , an imprint of @silver.press. I contributed two bits of writing to this collection - about Weathered Listenjng and Orbital Listening - and an extract of the first ended up on the cover! Chuffed and a bit starstruck to be in the company of the other (200!) contributors exploring how and why and where we listen, and as always in awe of editor / gatherer / sonic forager @soundarthannah 💫. Join us this Friday, September 11th in the WGXC Catskill Studio for an artist talk from Wave Farm's September 2026 Artist-in-Residence Hannah Kemp-Welch, broadcast live on WGXC 90.7-FM.

Doors at 5:30pm, live broadcast from 6pm to 7pm.

In residence from September 9th through 17th, Kemp-Welch will develop her project 'Light Phone,' an experiment in hyper-local communication. Inspired by the ‘Astro Phone’ or ‘Light Telephone,’ devices developed in the 1960s that transmit sound via modulated infrared light, documented in Lori Emerson's Radical Technology Sourcebook (2025), the project repurposes disused remote controls into short-range communication devices. Interested in the distinctive grain of infrared transmission, 'Light Phone' will create a network of low-power, DIY, line-of-sight telephones that future Wave Farm residents can use to communicate across the landscape.

Hannah Kemp-Welch is a sound artist with a social practice. Since gaining her amateur radio license in 2019, she has focused on developing inclusive pedagogies and technologies for electromagnetic listening. She constructs DIY antennas to tune into natural radio, documented in the BBC Radio 4 feature All Under One Magnetosphere (2025), produced with Oliver Sanders. She recently co-curated the symposium Electromagnetic Fields: Artistic Research and Radio Waves. Her edited collection Listening Glossary will be published by Silver Press in October 2026. Hannah is an Associate Lecturer for MA Sound Arts at London College of Communication, a PhD student with Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP), and a member of feminist radio art group Shortwave Collective.

At 9am this morning sound artist and Shortwave Collective member Hannah Kemp-Welch speaks with a number of sound artists and VLF enthusiasts to explore their fascination with the soundscape of the ionosphere.

Electromagnetic waves fill the universe, radiating from solar storms and bursts of lightning. Using simple, DIY tools, we can transduce these very low frequency (VLF) radio waves into sound. This is nature’s radio.

In ‘Sunspots and Earth Static’, we hear from artists and VLF enthusiasts Alyssa Moxley, Dan Tapper, Hannah Kemp-Welch, Matt Parker, pantea, Rob Stammes, Sébastien Robert and Stephen P. McGreevy, who share stories of listening across decades and continents.

I've been very lucky to spend the past week in Venice exploring the Biennale. Along the way, I put together a survey of the exhibition's sonic works, with a few reflections woven in.

If you're curious, you can read the review via the link in my bio. If you're planning a visit though, a warning: spoilers.

Learn to shoot and develop 8mm & 16mm film with me? I'm running another workshop at @photofusionuk on Saturday 8th August.

We'll use mechanical cameras (Bolex H16, B8 & P2) with B&W 16mm and 8mm film, load this into a lomotank and develop it using Kodak chemicals and a DIY instant coffee mix.

I promise a fun day! No film or photography experience needed. Link to book in my bio.

LISTENING GLOSSARY 🎐

Edited by Hannah Kemp-Welch @soundarthannah 🔊

Available for pre-order at silverpress.org – forthcoming in the Bodies of Sound series 💫

Listening Glossary explores the many meanings and practices of listening. Entries range from non-cochlear listening and machine listening to interspecies listening, tracing six decades of sonic thought and experimentation.

It gathers hundreds of terms for listening, contributed by
people from diverse disciplines and constituencies, including activists, artists, D/deaf and hard of hearing people, ecologists, educators, musicians, philosophers, psychologists, researchers and sociologists. Their entries take multiple forms, including personal narratives, diagrams, performance scores, theories and poems. The terms invite listening through another’s ears or from specific perspectives, and together, offer a practical guide to listening as a relational practice.

Includes texts by contributors including
