Atmospheric Antennas: a workshop at Hackoustic 10

Cities are full of hidden radio. Mains power, phones and computers all hum and buzz at very low frequencies (VLF), and further out you can hear lightning crackle and “whistlers”, the falling tones lightning makes as it travels along Earth’s magnetic field.

Join Hannah Kemp-Welch to build DIY VLF antennas in pairs and small groups. We’ll test two designs: a giant cable loop that takes several people to hold, and a portable hula-hoop antenna designed by Dan Tapper. Together we’ll also set up a shared library of antennas that anyone can borrow and take out of the city.

Sunday 25 October, 13:30 – 15:30
IKLECTIK, Peckham Levels, 5th floor, 95a Rye Lane, SE15 4ST
Part of Hackoustic 10 at IKLECTIKA 5th edition

Places are limited. Book on Eventbrite, link in bio.

A gorgeous afternoon soundwalking around Castlefield for @aurisfestival, with such a curious, open, and playful group ♥️

This is one of our favourite city-centre routes, taking us through the many layers of the city - both historically and physically. We started down by the canals and gradually made our way up to the top of the viaducts, listening as the sounds and perspectives shifted along the way. Accompanied by the constant drip of water from the morning’s rain, the coo of pigeons, an accidental bottle kick, and some gentle, and not so gentle, wind.

Thanks to @richtymon for capturing the walk so beautifully 📸

The performance is over. I wanted to write something down before tonight is gone.

I think I am still very grateful to London. Not because this city has made my life easier — it really hasn’t. But somehow, it has space for so many of my unrealistic ambitions, and also so many strange people.

Recently I’ve had to admit something I didn’t really want to admit: no matter how hard I try, maybe I just can’t live in the same way as many other people do.

I can’t always join every conversation or keep up when a place is crowded and noisy. Learning a new language, meeting new people, entering a new social environment — things that seem very natural to others can take much more energy from me.

I used to think if I tried harder, prepared more, or became braver, I could close these gaps. Now I’m slowly realising that some things don’t disappear just because you try hard enough.

And strangely, I don’t want to fix myself as much as I used to.

If I can’t hear, then I can’t hear. If I need subtitles, I use subtitles. If I need someone to repeat something, I ask. If I’m tired, I’m tired.

Standing at Cafe OTO tonight, I realised none of these things stopped me from getting here. In some ways, they are exactly why I was here.

The six-year-old me probably never imagined that “I can’t hear clearly”, “I can’t say it properly”, and “I can’t keep up” would one day become words, sound, a vinyl record, and somehow end up on a stage.

Maybe that’s why I’m grateful to London. It didn’t make me more complete. It just made me feel that I’m allowed to keep going without becoming complete first.

Tomorrow there will be new things to worry about. Work to finish, emails to reply to, and my life will probably still be a mess.

But not tonight.

Thank you @soundarthannah . Thank you London.
And thank you for everything that exists, and everything that is still happening. 🩵

Join us @cafeotodalston tonight to celebrate the launch of Listening Glossary edited by Hannah Kemp-Welch @soundarthannah. With Lucia Farinati, @alice._.eldridge @eleanormcdowall @suri.soundnotes Moushumi Bhowmik, Luigi Monteanno, @hectormacinnes @sasha_intheair @annie_g0h and Miriam Elgon.

The evening brings together 10 researchers and practitioners for a series of short contributions that form a live glossary. Each brings a term from the glossary to life through a reading and sonic offering. Moving between voices, sonic worlds and listening methods, the evening creates a constellation of possibilities for what listening might be.

Hannah Kemp-Welch will also be in conversation with Bodies of Sound co-editor Irene Revell @irene_revell, reflecting on the ideas and practices gathered in Listening Glossary.

The book brings together more than two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy, spanning nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power. Its entries invite us to listen through another’s ears and from specific perspectives, encountering forms of listening that range from the non-cochlear to the interspecies. Together, they reveal listening as a critical method for understanding and transforming the worlds we inhabit.

The evening is in collaboration with Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice @crisapsoundarts.
