Join the Friends of the Library of Rutherford for a Fall Cooking Decorating Class at the Rutherford Public Library on October 14, 2026 at 6:00PM. Attendees will enjoy a two-hour class taught by our very own board member, @sweetschefjen This event is for adults only, 21+ to attend.

Sweets Chef Jen, as she is known in Rutherford and on Instagram, is an award-winning pastry chef from California. Jennifer has over 20 years of pastry experience working in world-class kitchens from The Waterside Inn in Bray, England to The Lodge at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California to Oceans in New York City. Now that Jennifer calls Rutherford home, she would love to give back by teaching a Royal Icing Cookie Decorating class at her favorite spot, the public library.

During the class you can expect to learn about the different consistencies of royal icing, a recipe to take home for both royal icing and her popular sugar cookie, and a few different techniques to help you wow your friends and family this holiday season!

The class includes:

- a lesson in multiple cookie decoration designs

- a box with 5 cookies to decorate with 4 different colors of icing

- light refreshments, prizes & more

This event is BYOB and 21+ only so please bring your favorite adult beverage to enjoy while you decorate.

All event proceeds will go to support @rutherfordlibrary programs. taken in Rutherford Public Library by @sweetschefjen

The @rutherfordlibraryfriends hosted their first annual Fall Craft Night this past week and it was an absolute blast. This year’s theme was “Frost Your Way Into Fall” and in collaboration with @sweetschefjen the first craft was cookie decorating!
•
The night was designed to bring folks together in a welcoming environment, much like your favorite cozy fall sweater, with seasonal decorations, hearty snacks, and the option to BYOB.
•
During the 2 hour session, guests were shown a handful of different beginner friendly techniques, in fall’s favorite color scheme, used to decorate 5 cookie shapes 🎃🍁🍂
•
The energy in the room was truly magical; filled with laughter, making new friends and learning a new skill! We hope the folks who joined us had as much fun as we did hosting and look forward to trying something new, next year!

Special thanks to @traderjoes Clifton for donating beverages and a gift basket, @costco for the gift cards used to purchase supplies for the snack cups, and @_iknowjen from @theagencyrutherford for the cash donation that went to baking supplies ie:butter, sugar, flour!
Funds raised go to supporting programs at the @rutherfordlibrary like; the summer reading program, the new mural in the children’s area, movie licenses, and museum passes. taken in Rutherford, New Jersey by @sweetschefjen

Knowing that my hands would be on display at the cookie decorating class, I absolutely needed a fresh manicure and Kathy at organic nails did not disappoint!
She understood the assignment… FALL!

An evening at one of my favorite places ( 👋🏼 @rutherfordlibrary ) taking a class taught by one of my favorite bakers/artists/humans ( 👋🏼 @sweetschefjen ) alongside one of my favorite women ( 👋🏼 @ginny.perrin ) for one of my absolute favorite causes ( 👋🏼 @rutherfordlibraryfriends ). Oh and there were cookies. It is so easy to support this town and the beautiful people in it. I still need to work a bit on my decorating. 🍪 🍁 📚 taken in Rutherford, New Jersey by @sweetschefjen

Happy Birthday to my favorite member of the X-Men team
•
2 years ago I got to make Hugh Jackman a birthday cake for a celebration with his friends. Carrot cake loaded with carrots, apples, pecans and coconut, and of course smothered with cream cheese frosting!
Highlight for me was being able to call and tell my brothers because as a girl with 3 brothers, I’m VERY familiar with superheroes!

Theme: “something blue before I do” with a sprinkle of bows
•
When looking at this set all together, I can’t pick one cookie that I prefer over the others because they really just all compliment each other!
The solid bow as 1 cookie and that same bow and color on the ring and then the stencil on 3 different cookies utilized in 3 different ways! Best part, the client said “I trust you” which really allows me to create and make something extra special!

I bet you thought I was making bridal shower cookies… that’s because I was and just because the cookie cutter is labeled as one thing, doesn’t mean it can’t be reimagined into something so much better!
And you want to next level customize the design, pull the font from the invitation and use as the font for one of your cookies!

I bought this floral stencil because I thought it would be the perfect addition to this set. Adds great texture and looks prettier than airbrushing a design. I used this stencil on 2 other cookies to tie the set together.

Something blue before “I do” with lots of pretty bows!
I immediately had a million ideas for this set and can’t wait to share it with you!
Starting off with a perfectly wavy bow
💙
using a 104 angle tip start with the wider and down on the cookie and the thinner end up towards the sky. Your royal icing must be very stiff in order to get it to stand up and create nice waves. It helps me to visualize a figure 8 while I pipe the upper bow portion, and I like the ribbons hanging down to be wavy because it gives the illusion of movement on the cookie.
I always remove a bit of the extra icing from the center before going back over and making a perfect knot. Again, using the wider part of the tip at the top applying light pressure and pulling it over the center creating the knot.
💙
You will see more of these bows throughout the set as well as using different texture to create a bit of romance for this set.

When you move to a small town, it’s so important to get out and participate in everything you can… meet your neighbors, shop small, and celebrate what makes your small town great!
•
While Mario and Kieran were out of town, mommy and Poppy had a full day to celebrate Rutherford starting with “Rutherford day” where we got to say hello to lots of our favorite small businesses and friends in the town green space and then ended the evening at the community bbq hosted by @allstatedanmeredithrutherford and the @rutherfordchamber.
•
While I say hello to everyone, walking down the sidewalk, I’m actually quite shy and larger events like the community bbq take a lot of courage for me to go to, but I’m always happy that I went, after the fact. Poppy danced her heart out, to @kurtandmarty band, and even warmed up enough to dance with new friends.
•
Now she’s snuggled up next to me, drifting off to sleep, and I’m thinking about how thankful I am that my kiddos will grow up in a small town, just like I did!
