POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today is the last day of WHILE AWAY, my duo show with @ameliacarley at @550gallery! Thanks so much to everyone who has come out to see the show and to everyone who came to our artist talk yesterday.

This painting, titled ‘Vegetative, Sensitive, and Rational’, is named after Aristotle’s hierarchy of souls.

The vegetative soul (associated with plants) is the most rudimentary soul whose focus is on nourishment, growth, and reproduction. The sensitive soul (associated with animals) possesses the ability to experience sensory perception (touch, sight, hearing, taste, smell) and desire. The Rational soul is possessed only by humans, and encompasses all the “lower” soul functions but adds the capacity for intellect, reason, and abstract thought.

In this painting, I consider how all three of these souls might exist in a non-human entity. Here, mushroom-like not quite daisies gather in a grouping appearing almost as if they are gossiping with one another in a nod to mycorrhizal networks and plant intelligence.

I’ve always been interested in the collaborative and symbiotic relationships found in nature, and I consider us humans to be part of that system, not separate from it. I don’t believe in a hierarchy where humans are at the top, and I think that our tendency for human exceptionalism is exactly how and why we’ve gotten ourselves into the climate crisis we’re currently experiencing.

Learn to compost, talk to your neighbors, be kind, etc.

Salon Lolo is thrilled to announce the exhibition TELL THE TRUTH, WOMAN.
Women have always known things they were not asked to say.
This exhibition gathers artists shaped by New York and its demands, women of different ages, histories, and origins whose works refuse performance, explanation, or apology. Some are loud. Some are almost silent. All insist on honesty.
Tell the Truth, Women asks:
What does a woman carry that no one thought to ask about?
What truths live in the body before they reach language?
