It's Faculty Focus Friday! Today, we're highlighting Austin Martin.

Austin Martin is an urban political ecologist who draws from human-environmental geography and urban ecology. He focuses on bees in urban spaces and how flows of capital and uneven development affect biodiversity patterns in the urban landscape. Austin is currently finishing his dissertation as a PhD candidate at Temple University's Department of Geography, Environment, and Urban Studies.

Prof. Martin teaches Environmental Sustainability (MSE 2500) and Introduction to Sustainability Studies (GEV 3001).

Prof. Martin is originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He received a B.S. from Eastern University, M.Sc. from the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability, and PhD from Temple University's Department of Geography, Environment, and Urban Studies (ongoing).

Of all the courses I’ve taken, the jobs I’ve had, kg time in organizing. This was the greatest education I could’ve have ever received. It’s been an honor and a privilege to join everyone on the picket line. Your all truly amazing people with a resilience and talent that’s second to none. Always remember, when we fight we win, and if we don’t get it, shut it down. And when we shut it down, we get it!!! 💚🎺🎷💚

If I write anything more about this I’ll just start crying again so, in summary: we stuck with the union for 42 unprecedented days. We faced seemingly insurmountable odds. And we won. We beat Goliath. There really is power in the band of working folks when we stand hand in hand. I love every single one of these people. Including Chris Smalls.

@isaacekblad and Summer visited this week and we kayaked the Susquehanna to these 1,000-year old petroglyphs carved by Algonquin-speaking pre-Susquehannock people. Took us a while to find them after wandering a poison ivy-infested island full of screeching dinosaurian great blue herons nesting by the dozen.
Lancaster County, PA has a lot of Native American history if you look for it, including the massacre site from when the Paxton Boys came from Harrisburg to murder the refugees of recently-decimated nations, Susquehannock among them, in an anti-Native American fervor that swept area colonizers after the French and Indian War. A dark history worth remembering.

After a year+ of Zoom-only workshops and proposal writing, meeting IRL for the first time is cool and weird! Hoping for more of this (looking at you, other virtual friends).
